President Goodluck Jonathan has
challenged the nation’s security chiefs to deploy innovative ideas in
confronting the security challenges confronting the country.
Jonathan said creative ideas and high
sophistication were necessary because the nature of contemporary
security threats were different from erstwhile ones where the enemy was
known and confronted physically.
Jonathan gave the charge in his address
read at the graduation ceremony of Course ‘21’ Participants of the
National Defence College, Abuja, on Saturday.
Jonathan, who was represented by Senate
President, David Mark, called on the Armed Forces to be proactive by
ensuring that evil plots of terrorists and other criminal elements were
discovered and frustrated before their execution.
The President also urged the leadership
of the Armed Forces to ensure constant review of strategies as a way of
reducing the level of exposure of the country to such security threats.
Jonathan said security in the 21 Century was a product of security forces within and beyond the borders of the country.
He said, “Today, the enemy is usually
unseen, hiding behind human shields, despicable ideologies, and
deploying cyber offensives, in addition to lethal conventional and
unconventional armaments.
“Confronting these new threats requires new thinking, new approaches and greater sophistication in equipment and capabilities.
“Our Armed Forces must be agile and
proactive, by enhancing their capabilities to identify and disrupt
before execution, the plans and machinations of these faceless enemies
including their sources of funding, arsenal, training bases and
recruitment efforts.”
Jonathan said he would not fail in the
fulfilment of the promise of his administration to deliver democratic
dividends to the people and to also move the country to the next level.
One hundred and thirty out of 131
participants graduated from the programme while one did not meet the
requirements for the award of the certificate.
