Nigerian Navy to combat terrorism with change in warfare strategy

In a move to stem the tide of civilian massacre by terrorists in some parts of the North, the Nigerian Navy, yesterday, said it was time to change its warfare strategy, with a view to saving the defenceless populace.

The Navy, therefore, yesterday, started a five-day training on Protection of Civilians in Peace Support Operations and Internal Security, at the Naval Training Command, Apapa, Lagos.

Declaring the training open, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral Azubuike Ajuonu, explained that following the current state of security in the country, the Navy could no longer work in isolation in the creeks but was also involved in operations in built up areas like Plateau, Maiduguri and Bauchi states.

He said: “It is, therefore, considered extremely necessary for subitants to be trained on how to handle civilians in such operations, especially as the Uited Nations has made several provisions to improve the status of man. Thus, human rights activities can no longer be taken for granted.”

The training, which he said was in congnisance of the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff to emphasize professionalism in all aspects of naval training, was also aimed at lauching the trainees, comprising officers, commanders and senior ratings drawn from all the commands in the NN, into a new phase.
