Lagos deports Osun indigenes too – Govt

*Aregbosola

Osun State government has declared that it was also a victim of the Lagos State government’s policy on evacuation of destitute to their various states and cautioned the Anambra State government against politicising the issue.

Also, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state asked the Anambra State government to bury its anger on the matter and stop turning the issue into a serious political matter because of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

At a joint press conference by the officials of the state government and APC in Osogbo, yesterday, the government claimed that between April 27, 2010 and now about 135 indigenes of the state that were destitute have been moved from Lagos to the state.

Similarly, the state government had equally received two persons each who were indigenes of the state from Ogun and Ondo states on April 16, last year while four persons were also sent from Oyo State to the state in June this year.

Both the Acting Chairman of the APC in the state, Elder Adelowo Adebiyi and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths, Sports and Special Needs, Hon. Biyi Odunlade and other government officials spoke at the press conference.

“There is no bitterness or any sensation about this. It is routine administrative process, that when you have a destitute on your hand, without home or family, and after doing your best for them you send them to their people,”

“In Osun, we have similar programme of clearing the streets of beggars and the destitute. Those that can be empowered are given the needed assistance to be on their own. We are also going to resettle them one way or the other,” they argued.

They described the condemnation of the Lagos State government policy on the relocation of the destitute by the Anambra State government as unfortunate.

They maintained that the action of the Lagos state government did not conflict with the constitutional and God’s given right of people to live and work in any place of their choice within the country, adding that there was a large population of non-indigenes living and working in Lagos.

  1. You dont do two wrong in order to claim right. Deportation of Nigerians in Nigeria is wrong. Simple! What of those who died in detention? What of the inhuman treatment meted out on these so called "Destitutes" Does it mean that KAI has right to arrest and detain? All these questions are begging for answeres.

    1. Well, anonymous 7:03 the program has been in existence for long. It was never called "deportation". I wonder why the Igbos now start ranting about it. If you take a look at the exchange of correspondence between Lagos and Anambra govt, it showed that Anambra govt was aware of it.

  5. Don't let us deceive ourselves with words. There is no such thing as 'deport', 'deportation', about relocation of destitute s from one place to anuther place in Nigeria. Lagos is a city in Nigeria. Can it deport? Is Lagos another sovereign country within Nigeria and as such has the right to deport? NO!!!!!!! The state of Lagos has its own inherent rights by virtue of the Federal constitution. Lagos State has Environmental Laws that take care of destitution within its own Territory. This include 'relocation' and not 'deportation'of destitute s to places other than where they constitute nuisance. People of Igbo stock should stop insulting Fashola and Yoruba people, and spreading mischievous falsehood that can cause tribal war.

  6. We should be careful with the choice of words.

You don't call it DEPORTATION and it was never described as DEPORTATION but EVACUATION AND RELOCATION of destitute to meet up with their families and you can only get their family in their state of origin.

Igbos should be grateful to Lagos state Govt, if not for anything at least for making an Anambra man a Commissioner for commerce and Industry. Let's be reasonable; how many other tribes can we in East as commissioner? even in Ondo state, an Igbo man is made a commissioner therefore, please let us be reasonable while talking.

  7. I am wondering, if one have lived all his life in Lagos , contributed to the economy of Lagos over the years and for some reason ,fortunes change and he or she beomes destitue , the right thing then is to send the person home in same country ... if there are welfare benefits that Lagos provides , should it not go to indigenes and non indigenes . I think it is stupid to claim that this is normal and please stop referring to the Igbos in this matter and unnecessary sensationalizing it , what is bad is bad . That you made an Igbo man a commissioner and so what, he is working for his money and may even do better in some other jobs ...there are Nigerians of different tribes In governments of several countries in the world , from the USA to Australia . It is only in Nigeria that we hear such utter nonsense ... that Akabueze is a commissioner in Lagos means what exactly ... if we want to build a nation, I think it is time we do that , if not then let all man go their way so that if I have to come to Lagos , I can as well apply for a VISA . CRAP.

  8. GOOD TALK SBN70. THERE IS NO JUST CAUSE OR EXPLANATION FOR FASHOLA'S ACTION. THAT OSUN STATE KEPT MUTE OVER THE EVACUATION/DEPORTATION OR WHATEVER ADJECTIVE YOU CHOOSE, DOES NOT JUSTIFY SUCH ACTION. IT IS NOT EVEN A MATTER OF ETHNICITY, RATHER THE FACT IS THAT FASHOLA SEEMS TO HAVE A SERIOUS APATHY FOR THE POOR AND LESS PRIVILEGED JUDGING BY ALL HIS ANTI PEOPLE POLICIES ESP. SINCE HIS 2ND TERM IN OFFICE. CHECK IT OUT - ARBITRARY LASU FEES, BAN/RESTRICTION ON CERTAIN MODES OF TRANSPORT WITHOUT PROVIDING ANY ALTERNATIVE, MULTIPLE TAXATION, CREATION OF MULTIPLE AGENCIES TERRORIZING PEOPLE ETC. HE IS RUNNING AN ELITIST GOVT.IN A POVERTY STRICKEN ECONOMY. MAY GOD DELIVER US FROM THIS PHARAOH.

  9. For me oo,Yoruba are not Igbo enemies.Apart from d issue of Awolowo initiating the starvation of millions of Igbo children to death which is even a bygone,Yoruba has never treated any Igbo man bad again.Even the "deportation" thing affected other tribes.where the Igbo suffer heavily is in the north. It is common to see vehicles loaded wt Igbo corpses arrive the East.We would only make noise without doing anything. The worst we ever did was to start killing the Hausas in our side(Aba&Onitsha)&soldiers usually quickly come to their defence

  10. All Indigbo people believe is to grab other people's properties and say they are the hardest working people, super brilliant etc. They have no respect for the owners of the land they reside. They insult other tribes all the time. They are strong headed and they get punished all the time. They are like goats who will never look back even when you hit it on the head several times. Our leaders made mistakes. They should let them go to their country. Only very few of them behave like human beings. First Republic, they took over the whole of Lagos because Azikwe was the ceremonial president. Okonjo Iweaha with the man mountain ensured that it is only Indigbo that should be considered for juicy positions in the land. Before you kill a snake approaching you, first kill an Indigbo.

  11. @the anonymous that says Igbo should stay in their states.Perhaps you have never travelled.I've visited every nook and cranny of this country.Yorubas are also numerous in other states including my own Enugu. And Onitsha&Aba.I think the Igboman's problem is that he comes to somebody's land and erect gigantic structures which rather make him too visible. This is very evident in every part of Nigeria(you can enquire from someone who is widely travelled) especially Abuja&Lagos.Talk of Alaba int'l.ASPAMDA,Ajah just to mention but a few in Lagos

  12. So much noise about making Akabueze commissionner. Woz d big deal? If we are truly a federal state are we supposed to ask where ur from before allocating positions? For crying out loud, my cancellor here in lagos is from Edo state and if u go round, u will get more. Apart from d fact dat it is constitutional to do so, it is also a political tool for campaigning during elections. When Igbos constitute 55% of Lagos, making an Igbo man a commisioner doesn't deserve these hulabaloo
