Lagos ACN backs deportation of beggars to Anambra State

The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria says it supports the expulsion of 67 beggars and destitute by the Lagos State Government to the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.

The party, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, on Tuesday, said the action of the state government would go a long way in reducing crime in the state.

Igbokwe said, “To put the records straight, the Lagos State Government, with its commitment to the interests of Lagosians, had long embarked on the decision to pick up the many derelicts, the homeless, beggars and social miscreants that inhabit all parts of Lagos.

“The government cleans them up, finds means of livelihood for those that are employable and sends those it cannot manage to their respective states.

“We are all aware that this scheme has seen the practical reduction in the number of the beggars, street urchins and social miscreants that used to constitute real danger to life in Lagos and has seen such people moved back to various states, mainly in the North.”

He said before the state government embarked on the action, the Anambra State Government had been contacted but no response was received from it.

Igbokwe berated politicians, whom he said were using the opportunity to play politics.

He said, “We also put the nation on notice that before the latest movement of some people to Onitsha, we notified the Anambra State government, which neither responded nor took action on our complaint.

“We also want the public to note that the Lagos State Government was involved in a similar deal with the Akwa Ibom State Government when some indigent Lagosians were moved back from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos.”

Igbokwe however assured all Igbos living in Lagos to be rest assured as the state was still conducive for all those who wanted to do business.

  4. "Igbos should worship Yorubas"? Are they God? What have Yorubas done for Igbos that we should worship them, please? Yorubas once upon a time chased all the Igbos out of Lagos, didn't they? During the Civil War, was Lagos up to what it is now? Was there an Alaba, a Trade Fair Complex, or even half the level of development you witness today? Igbos pay their taxes, abide by the laws and do an honest days job. The bad ones should be sent back to their states, agreed, but to generalise this way sets a bad precedent. Or have we all forgotten the Rwandan genocide? And this is a very good initiative by the LASG, hope the Eastern States will follow suit in "deporting" lawless Yorubas, Hausas and other tribes. If we're going to fan the flames of ethnic hatred, let's do it right!

  6. Live Igokwe alone. He is a civilise one.
Look at Obama, some people taught that being an African decent he will bring to Africa all America has, or carry all Africans to America to spoil there. Na lie. Please shine your eyes the world is changing don't remain stagnant. Do not be too sentimental. Use your head.

  8. There are so many challenges in Nigeria. How can somebody live his town/village without a dime in his pocket, to at least stay in an hotel for some days, and without any relation at all to call or stay with temporarily, relocate to a place like Lagos? Is that normal? To the educated and enlightened ones that have travelled out of Nigeria, do they allow you to get in at the airport in Europe, US etc without stating the address of where you are going? I do not understand the argument. Should we allow these nuisance to continue to ruin the good job that is being done in Lagos? Igbos did not complain when Lagos dumped the street urchins in Ibadan the other day. Lagos should carve out Local government, to the Igbos and he should allow them to head all the markets in Lagos because the Yorubas are lazy and indolent people. That is what you get when you are accommodating. All sorts of rats will be on you.

  9. There're a lot of things wrong with this act. First, not all the pple in that group deported were from Anambra state,2nd,why did they not drop them off at the Government house or hand them over officially to the Anambra state govt, if they meant well for these unfortunate fellows? 3rd,As Nigerians why not rehabilitate them in Lagos considering that if they were doing well in Lagos, they would have been among those paying taxes to Lagos state. Considering that the number of non-Lagosians paying taxes & contributing positively to the development of the state are far more than the number of Lagosians doing the same, the Lagos state Govt.need to be more meticulous in handling issues like this. If all states toe this line, the possibility of abuse of the citizenship rights & federal character in our constitution is imminent. This action greatly undermines the corporate existence of that entity called Nigeria.

  10. This the kind of govt APC/ACN will bring to Nigeria. Politics of hatred and tribalism. Igbokwe or whatever they called him is paid contractor to ACN he is doing what he is being paid for. All the time Fashola has maltreating ibos especially traders like what is going on in ladipo, alaba and other places ibo traders are. He is forcefully taking their lively hood, imposing yoruba leaders on them against the tenets of democracy which he, tinubu and lai mohamed claim ACN/APC portray. This is a bid deceit. God will never allow them power to the central, because these guys including buhari will enslave certain tribes including all minority natinalities.
