Ahead of the September 7 2014 World Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Flames fo Malawi, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has urged the Federation of Internatioal Football Federation (FIFA) to apply the appropriate sanction on Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, who has been accused of using racist comments on Flames Belgian coach, Tom Saintfeit.
FAM Secretary-General, Suzgo Nyirenda told the Nyansa Times that Keshi goofed when he called Sainfeit ‘a white dude who should go back to Belgium”, noting that the onus was now on FIFA to deal with the matter, in line with its zero-tolerance for racism.
“The remarks by Keshi are totally unacceptable. We thought it was a personal attack on our coach and we had to defend him regardless of skin. We want FIFA to put a stop to the racist remarks from Keshi.
Evidence of what Keshi said has been sent to Fifa, who we hope will come up with some measures to control Keshi.”
It is recalled that on FIFA, handed down a four-month ban and an 11, 000 Swiss francs (about $9,046), to Flying Eagles coach Ladan, Bosso for remarks made in the wake of his team’s humiliating 4-0 loss to Chile at the in Canada.
Bosso had accused English referee Howard Webb of ‘racism’ after his team conceded the four goals in the extra-time of the quarter-final encounter.
Observers feel Keshi might be handed a similar punishment, which might rule him out of next month’s qualifier at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar, which will decide who advances to the final round of play-offs for Africa.
Eagles, who are the African champions, need just a draw to progress while Malawi must win if they are to qualify. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
