How Patience Jonathan’s women jamboree brought Abuja to a standstill for seven hours

The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, especially its Central Business District, was in lockdown on Thursday.

Security personnel blocked all the access roads to the Eagle Square where the event, entitled ‘Celebrating Nigerian Women for Peace and Empowerment’, took place.

The lockdown, which paralysed commercial activities in the city, lasted for about seven hours.

It also caused traffic gridlock on Shehu Shagari Way, Herbert Macaulay Way, Tafawa Balewa Way and other parts of the district.

Intermittently, helicopters, on surveillance, flew over the city to monitor developments.

The ceremony, which started about 9am, saw thousands of Nigerian women draped in white wrapper and green blouse.

They all arrived at the event venue in long buses.

Meanwhile, motorists, particularly commercial bus and taxi drivers, were at the receiving end of the lockdown as they were forced to make long and inconvenient detours to get to their destinations.

A taxi cab driver, Abubakar Aliyu, who spoke to our correspondent, said the blockage of the major roads to the CBD and other areas, affected his earnings for the day.

He said, “I make most of my daily earnings by taking passengers to Federal Secretariat and Eagle Square but on Thursday, I had to turn down many of the passengers because all the access routes to the CBD were blocked and there was traffic everywhere. It is past noon and I have yet to make half of my target.”
A bus operator, identified simply as Stanley, said he was stuck in traffic on Shehu Shagari Way for so many hours.

The bus driver, who noted that the event frustrated his programmes for the day, urged the authorities to organise such ceremonies on a Saturday.

  2. Most Nigerians would do anything for money and that is why the Nigerian government, sustains the impoverishment of the people as a method of making them available for use, abuse and discard. For a whit wrapper and a green blouse: they would spend the night at any square ___ Eagle, Turkey or Turtle.

  3. That is what I called political recklessness and it is unbecoming of the first lady. What is the relevance of this useless jamboree? It is a shame that this government do get there priority right, nobody within the government is saying anything about the ongoing ASSU strike, but we can afford to spend tax payers money any how. WHAT A SHAME!!!

  4. I don't know the joy of Nigeria women ,the same government that put the future of there children in shamble so that they can't be somebody in life still celebrating .. Patiently waited to the end of program yesterday non of the women ever mention the issue of the ASUU strike they prefer the rapper and the blouse with the token share than future of there children. Drawing my conclusion, this are not Nigeria women they are rather PDP faction of the Nigeria women, and that does not give a good picture of a GOOD mother.

"SHOW OF SHAME", I believe most of the women present there don't have means of livelihood because if they do, on Thursday they suppose to be at there duty post working. two years ago some of their colleague were travelling to Abuja on the same show of shame, they had accident on their way, since then those alive are yet to receive all the promises from MAMA GEJ. have be a victim of these politicians. 9. She needs to know she's the first lady worst appreciated by Nigerians in the history of Nigerian first ladies. Wait until your husband steps down, then look behind you & find out how many remain behind you. You'll certainly have support as long as your husband remains in power. Just don't forget it will one day be over.
