Gunmen kill Army Captain in Port Harcourt

A man simply identified as Mr Joseph was yesterday assassinated by yet unknown gunmen. He was said to have been trailed to the Psychiatric Hospital Road, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, where he was shot dead.
It was gathered that the assassins were on the victim’s trail from Aba Road to where he was killed at Rumuola. He drove himself in his Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

When The Nation visited the scene of the incident, residents were still in shock, wondering what the victim could have done to warrant his gruesome killing.
An eyewitness, Chibueze Kosidi, said: “The four gunmen came with a Toyota Camry car. When the victim noticed them, he tried to speed off, but the traffic snarl along the Psychiatric Hospital Road trapped him. He tried to escape, but the available space was too narrow for fast turning.
“When the gunmen noticed that he could not go anywhere, they came down from their vehicle and ordered him to step out. He refused their order; that was why they shot him twice in his head before destroying a side of his vehicle to confirm if he was dead.
“The gunmen immediately took off, as they shot into the air to scare people away. Nobody could go near the vehicle until one lady came and rushed him to an unknown hospital where he was latter confirmed dead.”
A source said the victim was pleading with them and shouting for help inside his car in Ikwerre dialect, adding that he might be an Ikwerre indigene.
Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) Mrs Angela Agabe, confirmed the incident. She, however, said: “The matter is still under investigation, but the deceased was not a business man. He was an Army Captain.”
The Army Public Relations Officer, Maj. Michael Etete said he was yet to confirm the incident and pleaded to call back as soon as he got the detail of the issue, but he never called until the press time.
