EDO: Kidnappers demand N20m per teacher

Three women primary school teachers who were abducted last week are to cough out N60million for their release.

The kidnappers have upped their ransom demand from N50million to N60million, which is N20 million per teacher.

Patience Osadolor, Momodu Aisha and Patience Oroghene were abducted at gunpoint at Orhogbua Primary School in Ekenwan village.

Academic activities have been grounded in 23 schools in Ovia North East Local Government as other teachers have stopped work.

Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers from the locality yesterday took to the streets of Benin City protesting the abduction.

They blamed Governor Adams Oshiomhole for the abduction, saying he made statements, which exposed them to criminals.

Oshiomhole, at an education summit, said teachers were better paid than civil servants.
NUT Chairman Nero Edema, who led the protesters, said it was inconceivable that primary school teachers could become targets for kidnappers.

He said: “Enough is enough. This is the fifth time that teachers were kidnapped within our local government. The governor said teachers are earning higher wages; this is the impression the kidnappers have by starting to kidnap our teachers.

“The Ekenwan zone, where we have 23 schools, will be closed, until the victims are released.”
