Documents Show Lagos may have Informed Anambra Govt Before Alleged Deportation of Igbos

We have obtained documents (see below) which show that Lagos State government may have informed the Anambra state government that rehabilitated destitute and psychiatric cases in Lagos who were from Anambra State would be sent back to the state. If that were so, why is the Anambra govt behaving as if they did not know Lagos government was bringing them home? We have seen 7 letters including correspondences between Anambra and Lagos dating as far back as 9th April on this matter.

However we will like the Anambra State Government to shed more light on the purported agreement for this exchange of destitutes and beggars. And why governor Obi wrote a letter of protest to President Goodluck Jonathan if that were so.

Governor Obi had claimed in the protest letter that "Lagos State did not even bother to consult with Anambra State authorities, before deporting 72 persons considered to be of Igbo extraction to Anambra State, is illegal, unconstitutional and a blatant violation of the human rights of these individuals and of the Nigerian Constitution."

While we wait for their response, what had been thought of as a matter of deportation has raised questions as newsmen investigated the development.

We discovered a letter from. Lagos govt to anambra titled: "Integration of. Beggars/Destitute with their parents" dated 9th April; Anambra govt reply asking for the supply of identities was dated 15th April; Lagos compliance attaching list as requested and inviting Anambra govt to visit rehab and identify claimers was dated 29th April.

Governor Raji Babatunde Fashola ( SAN) the Governor of Lagos State insists that contrary to claims, the issue in question has nothing to do with deportation, but a Social Welfare Intervention, involving several homeless destitutes and other psychiatric cases roaming the streets and some living under the bridges in Lagos. These people were taken in and treated and cared for by the Lagos State Government free of charge and thereafter needed to be reintegrated with their families.

After this rehabilitation the affected people disclosed their true identities and the disclosure revealed that 14 of them were from Anambra State. For the purpose of reintegration with their kith and kin back home( most of them had nobody in Lagos) and for further social support and care, Lagos State Government communicated the Anambra State Government as well as other affected state governments to come forward and identify and take over their people. (see letter as annex 1)

On receipt of this communication, Anambra State Government requested for the identities of those claiming to be from the state( see letter as annex 2). The list was promptly supplied to them by Lagos State for immediate and urgent action( see letter as annex 3).

The Lagos State Government further explained that this kind of exchange of destitutes occur between states, as she recently went to Akwa Ibom State to take back two of her rehabilitated citizens.( see letter as annex 4).

Indeed, the mega-city project of the Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola regime started shortly after he assumed office in June 2007 with the radical cleaning up of Oshodi, hitherto notorious for its clutter and criminality.

It was followed up with the beautification and greening of many erstwhile dirty and dark spots all over the state and thus giving the city a great facelift.

  1. Soo laughable.I can see Agbola,Eto,Udoh,Okon who are ALL from Anambra state.

I can also see Obudu,Ikanu,Gbogbosan LGA etc in Anambra state.

I can also see that the letter was discussing about 14 persons.
All these are further confirming that this act was done IN PURE BAD FAITH. Hatred for igbos is simply the cardinal consideration.

"Ndi-igbo,ndi yoruba kpolu anyi asi nke ukwuu".

No working with yoruba or hausa party, whatever it takes.
    This is how genocides begin.

  2. Leter or no letter, correspondent or no correspondent; what the Lagos state govt did was a blatant disrepect and disregard for the Nigerian constitution. What if their 'destitution' was the fault of the state govt to adequately discharge its functions diligently? For instance the state govt sponsored 'Area boys' hits a bus driver with charm that turns the person into a destitute, the state govt will now deport him for no fault of his. Too bad that a SAN is at the centre of all this.

  5. Imagine this bunch of illiterates!!!!! Still arguing blindly despite solid evidence. Igbos always blame others for their misfortunes. Your governor dubiously claimed he's unaware of the repatriated igbos which is not unexpected of ur tribe. The point is straight- leave south west and the north and stop constituting nuisance everywhere as it will solve ur problems altogether

  8. If all these claims by Fash that Anambra state Govt was aware of the rehabilitation and relocation of these people. Why did he now convey them by the early hours of the morning? If I know these so-called politicians well it would have been on channels and AIT, and also a big ceremony would be conducted for those helped by the LASG. I believe that Fash is just trying to do damage control with all these piece of papers that NE are showing us here. If all igbos had the same heart like mine, it is high time you came home and developed our place. Let us stop this tribalistic and marginalistic brouhaha once and for all.

  9. Is Victoria Agboola now an Anambra person's name? If she was Igbo and married to a Yoruba person she can lay claim to both states and therefore she should have been excluded from the list. At any rate, there's no evidence that the arrangement was concluded before the dumping at Upper Iweka. And how are we sure these are the same set of people dumped at Upper Iweka?

  15. stop insulting ibos, there would not have been nigeria without an ibo and still there will no nigeria without ibos. they're most indusrious and enterprising in this part of the world. all these hatred is born out of envy, jealous because no matter how you oppress, suppress, or compress the ibos they will always bounce back. Awo did on two occassion by using hunger to kill them during war, as if that was not enough. he went ahead to take all monies belonging to ibos and in return gave each person just only 20 pounds no matter how much the individual had. how else can ethnic cleansing could have been executed if not so. our brothers from west are afraid that should iboman clinge power he repay them tit for tat. but the truth is that ibo i know will not try it because they have forgotten all that and moved on, if not they will not continue to invest their hard earned money in building and developing any place they found themselves not just in lagos. ibos are spread everywhere in the world with same commercial and industrial spirit. go to south africa, ghana, cotonou, USA, europe including siberian countries where most people dare to go due to cold.
