‘Deportation’:They were 14 NOT 72....Fashola offers full response to Obi

Gov Babatunde Raji Fashola, Lagos State governor.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has offered a more detailed response to his Anambra State counterpart, Peter Obi as controversy raged over the sending home of some indigenes of Anambra.

It was his second response in 24 hours.

Fashola first corrected the exaggerated number of the people involved. He said they were 14 and not 70 or 72 as being circulated.

Second, his response included past letters to the Anambra state Governor, since April, informing him about the plight of the 14 people, who had indicated their desire to return to their home state, after they were rehabilitated at Majidun Rehabilitation Centre.

Fashola said the 14 people were picked up on the steets of Lagos “as part of a continuous exercise to assist vulnerable citizens who roam our streets without food or shelter and a number who have medical ailments, usually in the nature of mental infirmity”.

“They were taken to Majidun Rehabilitation Centre where they treated, detoxified and restored. Thereafter, it was possible for medical and social workers to interview them.

“In the event, they disclosed that they were from Anambra and sought assistance to go back home”, said the letter.

For those who may be thinking that the decision to send the 14 people home was the sole invention of Lagos State Government, Governor Fashola also included a letter from the Akwa Ibom Government to Lagos Ministry of Women Affairs, repatriating two indigenes of Lagos, who were picked up on the streets of Uyo.

It can be recalled that, Governor Obi blasted the Lagos state govenor "Lagos State did not even bother to consult with Anambra State authorities, before deporting 72 persons considered to be of Igbo extraction to Anambra State, is illegal, unconstitutional and a blatant violation of the human rights of these individuals and of the Nigerian Constitution."

  2. Governor Sir,
Accept that you are a tribalist. Simple! What if their Destitution was a product of bad governance? Do you know how many crimes your 'Area boys' commit against Lagosians? Posterity will judge you.

  3. You are simply a tribalist. What pains me most is that you are a SAN. It is pardonable if you were an illiterate. Your action offers no hope for Nigeria as a country.

  15. What has the publishing of Akwa Ibom letter got to do with inhuman treatment of Nigerians inside their fatherland? If anything, it exposes Lagos State government as callous, ego-centric and tribalistic. Where's their own letter to Anambra State government and who acknowledged it? Nonsense!

  16. If they found their families and reunited them it would have been ok. If it was a Govt to Govt deal and they were properly handed over to to a Govt agency it would have been ok. Dumping them on a spot in Upper Iweka is crude and barbaric to say the least. The action can only be pardoned if they were lunatics that were transported by uncaring relatives and dumped on a Lagos street as is usually done by many Igbos. Let us take heed for the future.

  17. I support people to seek greener pastures & in attempting to achieve, not blame inability to position self correctly on others.

Development of self is primary. Only relatives accepts persons regardless of liabilities.

Rather than hide cheaply under one social rights clause. We as a nation should constantly put intense energy to present skillsets that are lacked & i tell you, not only will our transportation be catered for, all other logistics including accommodation will be managed by the city/country that requires our service!

If we must develop rapidly as a nation, we need to be value-oriented, than always making emotions/sentiments the foundation of our actions.

  18. The press should stop all this unnecessary heat about this Igbo deportation issues,, the press are among those sowing seed of hate and division in this country! We are already dis-united, we should all be careful,

most of us commenting here are not yet born during the civil war! Some cannot even stay without food for a day, how many of you can stand seeing your love once lying on the ground shot dead ????? We should promote peace not hate ....

Just imagine what Tinubu cronies will do if by chance they get the exalted office under APC.The average Yoruba man is sentimental by nature; they see their domain as the only heaven that exist and all non Yorubas are intruders. 30. I strongly believe Governor Fashola is lying ,if actually he had been having discussion with the Anambra state government in respect of this issue ,why then did he drop those people at Onitsha? Is Onitsha government house? Which Anambra state government official did he hand them over to? In fact the level of hatred portrayed here by this man Fashola is not expected of a public servant who calls himself a governor .

  34. It is intresting that no one is asking why Gov. Peter Obi did not acknowledge that LASG contacted his gov earlier on this issue and disclose his response. Is he just seeking cheap popularity? With the contnued slaughter of igbos by BH, where is the outrage from Igbo Govs?..Peter Obi and Orji and others compaired to the return of 14 madmen that were dumped in Lagos?. Hmmmm...just food for thought about ibos and their leaders.

  35. If you like cry from now till infinity ,BRF has done it and there is no going back . Going forward he will deport more useless non Lagosian than are only liabilities to lagos . Lagos must move like a mega city and plenty of sacrifices must be paid including human sacrifices . So if you are not a Lagosian and you are a liability , l pity you. BRF, more of that

  36. Interesting.....I wonder how you igbos think. If you guys think Fash is really wrong and he is lying, maybe you should ask what the two igbo people in his goverment presently are still doing that they haven't resigned...one of them from anambra state o...
Dont y'all realise some people are just using you to play politics?

  37. @Ken "Lagos development has nothing to do with the Yoruba race". I beg to differ with you, as this does not seem to be the case. History of Lagos 101 will tell you that it was the Saro/Kiri yo (Creole) people with Yoruba blood that laid the foundation of modern Lagos, including culinary, music, education, religion, civil service, etc.

If you are keen, I can take you on a guided tour of where they first settled on Lagos island where you can see some relics of their footprints, before they moved to Yaba, etc.

  38. It is a big shame that Fashola and his party unwittingly allowed themselves to fall into a humongous elephant trap which Ibo political elite and intelligentsia have been seeking to lay for a while. Of course they have scored a cheap political capital which is now being made an albatross for Fashola, his party, and the Yoruba people to carry, just as they did for Awo. A myth will now be created round this, and in 10, 20...50 years time, when a Yoruba nurses a presidential ambition, Ibo people will refer to this, to galvanise support against such ambition.

  39. Malaysia jails Nigerian student for heroin

A Nigerian student has been sentenced to 12 years’ jail and 10 strokes of the cane by the High Court in Shah Alam, Malaysia for possession of 90.99 grammes of drugs in Subang Jaya two years ago.

According to the Malay Mail Online.com, Judge Datuk Abdul Alim Abdullah handed down the sentence on Uchenna Onuzulike, 37, who pleaded guilty to the alternative charge.

He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of arrest.

Onuzulike was charged with possession of 80.59g of heroin and 10.4g of morphine, found in two boxes of scooter roller board to be sent abroad.

The offence was committed at a delivery company, Traxenim Corp Sdn Bhd, at Jalan USJ 10/1 Subang Jaya at 1.30pm on May 24 2011.

Initially, Onuzulike was charged with trafficking in the drugs, an offence which carried the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

However, he pleaded not guilty after the prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong offered an alternative charge with possession of the drugs.

  40. "There was a country"if you dont like my work write your own says the Professor of our time Prof.Chinua Achebe, had explain an average Yoruba man their surname is BETRAYAL,so am not surprised at Lier Mohammed neither am i surprised @ Fashola, this is their life generally they are knwn for betrayal,so nobody should bother himself for nothing sake they will still betray you,for those of you IGBOs that are still wining & dining with Fashola in Lagos that you all will regret your relationship with them

  41. Fashola silence would have been the best answer but it seems you really knew what you did that was why you have been trying all hard to defend. What prevented you from handing them over to the government of the said state if you dont know what you are doing.
