NATIONAL President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Nasir Issa-Fagee, has said that the Nigerian universities will not continue to churn out unemployable graduates because of lack of training facilities in the institutions.
The ASUU President, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard in Abuja, said that though the strike affected both parents and students, there was the need for sacrifice by all the stakeholders in order to ensure that Nigeria graduates competed with their peers in other parts of the world.
He noted that the agreement which the union entered into with the federal government in 2009 was due for review in June 20th, 2012, regretting that many years after the agreement it had not been substantially implemented.
Declaring the indefinite strike as total, the ASUU President said that though the strike had affected academic calendar, the universities cannot continue in the old way of doing things that was not beneficial to graduates after their long years in school.
He said, “The academic calendar had already been affected. For the fact that students were graduating they do not even perform well when they get into the labour market.
“I don’t really know what is our priority, is it that we just continue churning out graduates with certificate who may not perform because they have not been trained adequately because of lack of training facilities, research, laboratories, workshops and adequately equipped libraries.
“ This is an agreement that was signed in 2009 and it supposed to have been reviewed in 20th June 12 last year, I hope we are now in July, 2013 that is one year after, we have not substantially implemented that agreement talk less of commencing the process of review.
“So I think that is the key issue. If government is serious, it would have substantially implemented the agreement before June 20 and commence the process of review of that agreement.”

Like government, like ASUU. The Fed Govt has failed ASUU and ASUU has failed the students and their parents. Imagine all the subventions and intervention funds that government has been releasing every year. What have the Universities been doing with it? What has ASUU done about it? Nothing. Because their members, the VC and Directors simply use fictitious companies to obtain contracts that are never implemented and when they implement, over 60% go to theiir pockets. ASUU should be ashamed of themselves. They should start by holding their Vice-Chancellors responsible, otherwise they're still the usual empty vessels that are known for making the loudest noise. Rather, it is non-teaching staff who should be complaining. In my University, if you're not a Pirate or Sea Dog, nothing for you. All appointments go them. This happens in most Universities too where the Oga at the top is a Sea Dog. They operate with impunity, loot, misappropriate and nothing happens at the end of the day. ASUU will show the students that they're sincere when they start holding their VCs responsible. Else, ASUU should go to hell. They're not making any case for the students. Uptill now, despite improvement in salary, ASUU members are still addressing students in class like touts. They debase the students with the language they use in class. The collect 'sorting', else you fail. Why are they complaining of producing unemployable graduates? Who made them to produce them unemployable? Useless lecturers. Think about it... These same unemployable folk make waves when they go for Masters abroad. What we need are people who are ready to mould lives. People who love their work and country. We need mentors. We need people who see lecturing as a life, a career, a calling and not a mere job. By the way, what is the process of employing these 'unemployable' lecturers? Most of them were handpicked for the job. Gosh! ASUU irritates me a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe same story everytime ASUU answer her father's name STRIKE. tell us that university lecturers want to earn like politicians because after last partial implementation there has NOT been any partial employability on part of our university graduates. I know definitely that ASUU will waste the students' time and has nothing to show for it @ the end of strike. Corruption, greed, self-centred interest, and incompetence have characterised every segment of nigerian society.
