Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain has joined Napoli from Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee, the Spanish club confirmed on Saturday.
“Real Madrid can confirm that Gonzalo Higuain has been transferred to Napoli,” said a statement on the club’s website.
“The club would like to show its thanks for his dedication and professionalism throughout his years at the club and wish him all the best in his new challenge.”
The move ends weeks of speculation after Higuain publicly declared his desire to leave Madrid at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old, who scored 121 goals in six-and-a-half season at the Bernabeu, had been strongly linked with moves to both Juventus and Arsenal but neither club were willing to match Real’s reported asking price of around 37 million euros ($49.1 million, £31.9 million).
Napoli, though, were well-positioned to match the Spanish giants demands having just sold their own star striker Edison Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain for 64 million euros last week.
Higuain will join former Real teammates Raul Albiol and Jose Maria Callejon in southern Italy after they too made the move from Madrid to Naples earlier this month. AFP Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
