The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a Non Government Organisation, has called for tolerance on the controversy concerning child marriage.
MURIC’s Director, Ishaq Akintola, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.
The statement said that in conformity with the tenets of Islam, age was not part of the conditions which must be met before marriage could be solemnised.
It said that where the bride was a ‘minor’, Islam prescribes protective solemnisation of marriage to shield the bride from abuse.
“This means that the girl who is deemed to be of tender age is left untouched by the man until she attains puberty.
“Another major condition for child marriage is that the girl herself has the right to repudiate the marriage when she attains maturity if she does not like her spouse.
“MURIC believes that honourable and dignifying child marriage is better than child prostitution which is rampant in Nigerian cities and red light zones,’’ it said.
The statement compared the globalisation and promotion of homosexualism, lesbianism and same-sex marriage as a direct challenge to God’s divine order.
The Senate, on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee, rejected the deletion of the clause on renunciation of citizenship.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, said that the clause was recommended for deletion because it was considered discriminatory.
He said the clause, which had been in the Constitution since 1979, had nothing to do with child marriage as was being insinuated by some Nigerians.

ReplyDeleteA white said that he embraced Islam not because of the behaviour and dispositions of the muslims but because of what he read about Islam.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I'll say with no sense of sentiment or intimidation that most of we muslims have failed to portray what Islam really is. Islamically, it's a BIG sin to abuse/curse any other religion irrespective of how much it is condemned/ condemnable.
It's more than stupid of a person to refer to Islam as a demonic religion, I'll not be suprised to see that you don't know the meaning of the word "Daemon/demon"
Our Islamic clerics should know that there is a point at which a young lady cannot conveniently conceive a child not to talk of delivering one. The resultant effect of early pregnancy can either deform the unborn child, damage the naïve girl's womb or bring about excessive pain on the prepubescent child. Remember, Islam is a religion of peace, if so, why will Islam want to inflict pains of this nature on a young child that is suppose to be in school learning how to secure a better life and future? Exceptionally, marrying a prepubescent child can only take place if such child appears SO BIG and mature that it's even hard to know. Therefore, Islamic injunction implies and project none of these pains- let's get this straight because no husband will harbour a wife without being so tempted to touch or what's the essence of perceiving what you won't eat. If we marry young children because we don't want to lose them to another man, then logically, we can "engage" them when they are young with no sexual string attached. Doing this has automatically protected the sanctity of the young child and protect our own integrity. I rise! Prof. Kazzylauren

ReplyDeleteHia.when does a child attain puberty?. Is someone who has attained puberty not a child? Is a 13 year old not a child? And then you say she has the right to repudiate the marriage when her whole body has been rough handled by her so-called hubby.....na wa ooo. It is well with Nigeria
ReplyDeleteOnce a fool always a fool.A man who does not know how to clean his defecation cannot clean for another. A good muslim cannot abuse anybody's religion so as a good and responsible christian cannot do it too. A muslim and his religion are inseparable. Being Nigeria a secular state does not mean that to abandon your religion. Read Islam before abuse it,pal.
ReplyDeleteDear Brethren, We are quick to make comments on news items but how many of you take one minute a day to pray for Nigeria that the evil men and religion will not pervert it huh?
ReplyDeleteThe aim is to make Nigeria look like an Islamic country and then sell it to the Organization of Islamic Countries. Christ must reign in Nigeria. So PRAY!!

TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN!!!
One small question to all contributors: If people of a particular faith live in a country, would it be in order to expect that the laws of that country respect, protect and take cognisance of the tenets of the faiths of the people in enunciating the framework for peaceful co-existence and buy-in into the state/country?
ReplyDeletewhy is it difficult for this country to be shared? that way they can marry their unborn. men that should be de-dicked.
ReplyDeleteWhat are we quarreling about sef my people?
ReplyDeleteIts good for any religious group to present and defend what God instruct them through the prophet of their faith, Christians should be more vocal in condemning same sex that is being peddled within their circle. And leave issue of under age sex. Christians cannot stand for their faith but will be making noise when others are furthering theirs!
ReplyDeleteI think our leaders are in support of religious crisis in Nigeria. This issue has coursed so many problems even among Nigerian.
ReplyDelete@ anonymous 7:57, what religion do you practice? you are satan's right hand man arent you?
