The people of Mr Akinyelure’s Senatorial District on Monday staged a peaceful protest in Akure, the State Capital against the voting of the lawmaker representing them in the Senate for supporting the child marriage bill.
Summoned by the constituents to a meeting held at the Cultural Centre Auditorium, Akure, which is also the Senatorial headquarters, Mr Akinyelure regretted the act and apologised to the people, explaining that he cast the vote in error.
Akinyelure, who is popularly known as ”Allover” could not control himself as he wept profusely like a baby in the presence of his people after prostrating to them, seeking forgiveness.
The lawmaker, while defending himself on the issue, claimed that he mistakenly pressed “NO” instead of “YES” when the lawmakers embarked on voting since the voting style was electronic.
He said, “Nobody is above human error. What happened has made me to become wiser, because nobody is perfect except God. I will like to make the following clarification on the subject matter to correct the wrong allegations of voting in favour of underage marriage as widely reported in the national dailies.
“Before this issue occurred, what the Senate considered for determination under the review of the Nigerian Constitution was renunciation of citizenship under the Constitution as contained in section 29 (4b) which provides that ‘any woman who married shall be deemed to be a full age.’ it is worthy of note that full age has been defined under section 29 (4a) to mean the age of 18 years and above.”
He emphasised that as a true Yoruba man, he wouldn’t have intentionally voted in support of child marriage.
He said there is still hope in correcting the situation as the bill will still be passed at the House of Representatives and the States Houses of Assembly.
Prominent Nigerians and human right organisations took to the social media to protest what they described as legalisation of sexual abuse of underage girls.
The protests were held in parts of the country on Saturday such as Abuja and Lagos among others. Also, petitions were signed to protest the law.
The protesters might besiege all state Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly on Tuesday to call on the Senate to reverse itself.
Those who protested queried why underage Nigerians could not exercise their franchise at the poll but were being subjected to marriage at tender age. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

The Nigerian Senate must rise up to this public out-cry. We do not want the law and so it must be reversed immediately. David Mark and co should tow the path of honour.

ReplyDeleteI am so proud to be an Ibo. What a lovely tribe. In the midst of the hatred we are still on top.
ReplyDeleteWe know what is good, do what is good because goodness runs in our blood.
You cannot see an Ibo man voting for such dirty unholy bill.
Almost all the states were represented by an ibo during the MBGN contest. Even the winner was an Ibo.
Why? Because; we are good. We are on top.
Let them pass the bill if they want. I know it will never affect any of my sister. An Ibo man can never give out his under aged daughter for marriage. So the bill was meant for mostly the Mallam's and some Ofe mmanu's.
LMFAO! u better don't go about saying this Ibgo/Yoruba/hausa rubbish, every Man is a dog n women r bitches, its the amount of control u have over yourself that matters, I am sure there r some Ibgo men that are happy with the law.
DeleteI think most of us need to follow things rightly the way they are. This clause in question had always been in our constitution b4 now,the vote casted in the Senate from what I understood was whether to leave the clause like that or ammend it. Those who voted to leave it as it is were in majority. We Must note that if any one is to be condemned it is those who put the clause there in the first place. Most of us don' t make efforts to know our constitution otherwise we shouldn't have just found it was there.
ReplyDeletePls what are doing to also stop early SEX because s is very common in our society
ReplyDeleteIs this man fit to be a senator in the first instance? If he doesn't know the difference between yes and no, I think he should come back home quickly.
ReplyDeletefuck the guy above, you wil nt give your sister in the hands of marriage, but you wil allow her to be rape by her pastor
ReplyDelete@10:51 I am an Igbo. But there is something I can't understand about your comment. Why did you bring up the issue of tribe? Be careful what you post. The issue of underage marriage may not be the case in igboland but sexual molestation of underage girls is not peculiar to any tribe or race. Be objective please.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 10:51am: What a pity, but an ibo man and woman can sell their unborn babies for a very cheap price into slavery and to a ritualist for a ritual purpose and their under-age daugthers into slavery, prostitutions and child molestation.A realy foolish, premitive and fetish way of living,am real ashamed of your cultures and traditions. What a way of being on top, realy disgussting!
ReplyDeleteSuch motion isn't ordinary its a new symptom of Staphylococcus aureus. Yerima has a heavy growth of micrococci 4rm my own point of view
ReplyDeleteAnd here is our first idiot of the day. Every tribe has one and this one choses to contribute his own quota of rubbish. That said, I do love the Igbos and they are one of the black race's greatest people
ReplyDeleteBut ur your fathers son can marry ur mother, ur mother can not inherit ur father belongings, etc IBO ke IBO ni.
ReplyDelete@10:51 you are very correct. Though am not an Ibo, I wonder why 29 states were represented by the Ibo's on the MBGN contest. Is it that they are the prettiest? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteThe bill that was passed was meant for muslims. The senator ayo that is giving crocodile tears is a muslim. In yoruba land, muslim yorubas rule while christians are the ruled.
Is only a mumu who don't kno yes or no button, idiot
ReplyDeleteCould u guys talk about the issue at hand and 4get about this tribe thing. There's no tribe that doesn't possess its own inadequacies & excesses. So if we intend to discuss National issues we must think & approach them constructively. My question is why did it take us almost 15yrs to discover this clause in our constitution? There are so many other clauses contained in there that will be detrimental to d social welfare of Nigerians.
