A notable Nollywood actress, Mrs Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has criticised the recent Senate approval of early child marriage.
Omotola expressed her feeling on the issue while speaking as a Special Guest at the MBGN beauty pageant on Saturday night in Yenagoa.
According to her, approving early marriage of the girl-child will expose her to various abuses and exploitation.
“Many of the girls out of school today have been abused, raped and neglected.
“Who cares about the helpless and neglected girl children that are being raped on daily basis?
“Must we have to wait for another Malala Yousafzai before we do what is right for the future of our children?” Jelaide-Ekeinde asked.
The actress, who was honoured with ‘SilverBird Unique Personality of the year’ award, called on the government to rather empower the girl-child through sound and compulsory education programmes.
She enjoined Nigerians to rise and say ‘no’ to the enslavement of the girl-child through early marriages, noting that the time had come for Nigerian girls to be free from all forms of bondage and deprivation.

ReplyDeleteThe type of people we have in the senate is a clear picture of a sick nation. Our major road networks are in terrible state, education is in shamble and the future of the teaming youth has been mortgaged. When evil is tolerated and accommodated by the leaders that supposed to guide the ship of a nation like ours; these same leaders should be ready for the wrath of God sooner or later. Good day.

ReplyDeleteOmotola was 18 when she got married. At 18 u r a certified adult. She chose to get married and not muck about. To God be the glory she's still married. She looks the way she does cos she takes care of herself and has a loving and doting husband.

ReplyDeleteDoes Omotola marrying at 18 justify marriage of under-aged children or deny her the right to speak against marriage of under-aged children? Apparently, Omotola married the man of her choice and that was after her acting career had begun. I admire her courage at speaking out the way she did, and I hope that somehow, it can help in getting the senate to re-consider and remove that faulty constitutional clause as they had already voted to do, before Yerima started reminding us of who he is!

ReplyDeleteWe are under pressure to agreed on same sex marriage. If we don't agree on dat d west will not give us aid again and we hv 2 pay back our external debts which is too much. Nigerians should await for more shocker frm d senate bcos they make so much money frm external aids frm d west which were suppose to be for d benefit of d masses. More shocker will surely come.
