Participants and resource persons at a national conference on ‘Nigeria’s Socio-economic and Political Dilemma: The Challenges and the Way Out’ held in Owo, Ondo State, have submitted that Vision 2020 is no longer feasible in view of the socio-economic and political challenges facing the country.
They stated this in a communique issued
at the end of the two-day conference. A copy of the statement, which
was signed by the Chairman, Conference Organising Committee, Prof.
Ibisesan Ayodele, was made available to our correspondent in Akure on
Sunday
The conference insisted that the process
of development, distribution and utilisation of the nation’s vast
resources was apparent in the conclusion by the Nigerian
socio-economic and political analysts that Vision 2020 was no longer
feasible within the prescribed time frame.
The conference, which was attended by
academics, entrepreneurs, bankers, politicians, civil servants, among
others, was organised by the Achievers University, Owo .
The objective of the conference, the
communique added, was “to provide a forum for interaction amongst
stakeholders of the Nigerian economy, and particularly, to provide an
opportu
nity and a sensitising mechanism for Nigerians.”
It lamented that the realisation of
the non-realiseable nature of the vision was coming “at a time long
after our hopes had been raised and huge sums of money expended by
government and private entrepreneurs for the realisation of the vision.”
The conference noted and recognised the
abundance of resources in the country and the need to develop them
for socio-economic and political development .
It also recognised the challenges
facing the country in the processes of the development, allocation and
utilisation of its resources.
