N23bn pension scam: Suspects cleared 200 cheques daily - Bank witness

A prosecution witness in the trial of seven public servants indicted in the N23 billion Police pension fraud yesterday said the suspects made several cash withdrawals from 200 cheques daily from the bank.

The accused persons include Cyril Attang, former chief accountant, Police Pension office; Esai Dangabar, a retired director, Ministry of Aviation; Atiku Abubakar Kigo, a permanent secretary, Office of the Head of Service; Ahmed Wada, former deputy director of Police Pension office and presently attached to Ministry of Sports; and accountants Veronica Onyegbula, Sani Habila Zira and Christian Madubuike.

At yesterday’s hearing, Ramoni Alabi, Head of Customer Complaints and Investigation Section in First Bank PLC, told an Abuja High Court that between 200 and 450 cheques were paid daily into the pension account with the bank, written in the name of some directors.

Under examination by EFCC counsel Rotimi Jacob (SAN), Alabi  said the suspects crossed  the N5 million limit set by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence for financial transactions by drawing between the sums of N500, 000 and N4.9 million every day.

“On the 9th of January 2009, 309 cheques were deposited to the bank by Onyegbula and by close of work she came back with heavy security to collect the cash,” he said.

Justice Hussein Baba Yusuf admitted computer prints of the pension fund account statements with the bank, nine volumes of photocopies of the cheques used in the transactions, and account mandate cards bearing the original signatures of Ahmed Wada.

The case was adjourned to October 24 and 25 for cross examination.
