Four remanded for robbery in church

Four men were Thursday arraigned before a Lagos State High Court in Igbosere for allegedly robbing a clergy, Apostle Nelson Opara, of his handset and money during a vigil service in the church.


It was gathered that the defendants – Jamiu Saka 18; Yusuf Lateef 20; Chukwudi Onwuharanye 18; and David Onokpise 19, entered the said church at 3:30 a.m of a vigil service, and robbed members of the church.

According to the charge, the defendants were also alleged to have on May 19, 2012, at Sowers Ministry International, 64A Kirikiri Road, Olodi Apapa, Lagos State, in the Lagos Division, whilst armed with guns and cutlasses robbed one Okon Esther and dispossed her of two Visafone and one Blackberry Curve 3 mobile phones.

The defendants, who all reside in Ajegunle area of Lagos, were arraigned on a three-count-charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.


However luck ran out of a member of the gang, who was apprehended while others escaped. When he was searched, Indian hemp and a spiritual ring were found.

The plea of 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants was taken in English language, while the plea of 2nd defendant was taken in Yoruba. They all pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them by the State of Lagos.
The prosecutor, Mr O. Soetan, informed the court that the alleged offence was contrary to Section 295 (2) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

The presiding judge, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo, adjourned to 29 and 30 September for continuation of trial.
