Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West, has described the performance of Flying Eagles at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey as disappointing.
West observed that the team lacked the technicalities of a good team.
“The players were disappointing, their performance was nothing to write home about, this is the lowest performance I have seen this year.
“The technical department lost it, we lacked everything a complete team should have, it was a disappointing tournament.
“A player can only give what they have, they just didn’t have it in them, only two players stood out for me,” West said.
The former Inter- Millan player also told NAN that the quality of play of African countries was not encouraging.
Meanwhile the team’s ouster has been attributed to lack of firing power by the Lagos State University sports council chairman, Ademola Onifade.
“The senior team didn’t have attackers at the Confederations Cup in Brazil and the same thing with the U-20. I mean they lost so many chances, but a good team must take their chances, and that’s the major reason that we lost.
But other facets of the game in my opinion are alright, but we need to do something about our attackers.” The Flying Eagles lost 1-2 to Uruguay in the round of 16 of the competition. During the group stages, Nigeria lost their first game to Portugal 3-2, but salvaged some hope when they beat Cuba 3-0 and Korea 1-0.
But Ghana against all odds beat Portugal 3-2 to reach the final eight of the tournament. The first semi-final will take place today, while the other semi-final comes up on Sunday.
“Again, the players need to be more committed to what they are doing but on a general note they played well. The fact that a player was sent out was a major factor in our defeat,” added Professor Onifade.
