The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has agreed to scrap the Bureau of Public Enterprises and 219 other parastatals and agencies.
Also, in spite of the controversy, the government has accepted the recommendation to merge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
But the government has accepted the recommendation to conduct a “proper investigation into the allegations made by the National Boundaries Commission against the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) over the funding of two non-existent boundary demarcations.
The OSGOF will also be probed for alleged illegal extension of Nigeria’s maritime boundary from 200 nautical miles to 350 nautical miles at the cost of US$12 million without consulting.
These are the highlights of the outcome of a review of the White Paper on the report of the Presidential Committee on the Rationalization and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions, which was headed by ex-Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had spent the last three weeks to review the report and concluded the exercise on June 26.
The Federal Government FG had in 2011 inaugurated the Oronsaye panel to restructure and rationalize Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies of the government as part of measures to reduce the rising budget profile.
After the submission of the report, a White Paper Committee was set up to look at the recommendations of the Presidential Committee.
The FEC, however, finally debated and ratified the recommendations of the White paper Committee.
According to a document obtained by our correspondent, some of the agencies to be scrapped are the BPE; National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP); Fiscal Responsibility Commission(FRC); Public Complaints Commission(PCC); Nigerian Export Promotion Council; Public Complaints Commission (PCC); National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC); Federal Highways Department; Utilities Charges Commission; and National Economic Intelligence Committee among others.

Good work
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed by FG movement. There so many duplicate portfolios within the system.
ReplyDeleteImpressive! I commend the effort of FG on this one, it long due. So many duplicated portfolios in the system and waste of public funds.
ReplyDeleteNawao! U dey say goodwork! Have u thought of where workers of this agencies, parastatals n commission will go from here, right into d labour market, creating more unemployment. What they did with EFCC n ICPC more better, merging them to stop duplication of duties but I hope this will nt also result in sacking of so many workers from their fold also. GEJ pls look a better way of deploying n engaging the workers of these agencies u want to scrap instead of sending out into d labour market. Unemployment in nigeria today has gotten to it's peak, this may result to chaos, anarchy n full blown demonstrations one day o!
ReplyDeleteLet wait and see the possibility of the Scrapping exercise because the so call leaders are the one feeding from the agencies.
ReplyDeleteThere is no need to be excited about this action of the FG because this is only a small part of the full recommendations contained in the Oronsaye-led report.
ReplyDeleteApart from mergers and closedowns, the FG should discourage corruption using technology to its fullest.
Why Some persons are recommending fed govt over d purported plan to scrap these numerous parastals n agencies without considering d time bomb dis may cause, Nigeria is one of d countries wit highest unemployment rate couple wit this plan wot do u think wil happen, i say is a time bomb waitin 2 explode, i wil urge my brother GEJ not 2 listen 2 those useless advisers who do not ave anytin 2 loose wen d time comes.
ReplyDeleteTHAT OF EFCC AND ICPC IS THE MAIN THIN
ReplyDeleteMr GEJ kindly witdraw such advice. In Nigeria today about 10 to 15 people are getting food from a govt worker. Arrow head to blood presure and six feet.
ReplyDeleteGovt has told us that they wont sack the workers. The ppl that will be mostly affected are the Chief Executives of such parastatals and they are just a negligible minority of the labour force but they eat the bulk of the overhead cost. If about 200 agencies are scrapped and merged as the case may be, the allocation for upkeep of these useless CEOs will be saved and can even be used to boost the salary of middle/ junior cadre officers. One luv GEJ & Co.
ReplyDeleteGood job, if it will be sustained and the resources from this action well utilised.
ReplyDeleteI think the FG decision is a step in the right direction.Majority of the workers in these establishment are just being paid salaries for doing virtually nothing, most of them don't even go to work at all & they will be paid. If these workers are patriotic enough, they would have done something about their idleness in order to earn/justify their pay. Also, if the FG is really sincere about reforming Nigeria they should work assidously to stamp out corruption & impunity that are so rampant in govt. establishments & among public office holders especially the politicians. To move this nation forward we need to take a drastic step in the right direction. God Bless Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteBefore the establishment of this insitutions, didn't d FG govt recognised tis duplications,if they insist on going on with d tis plan let them deploy those after workers into various ministries.4 d FG cannot jus wake up over night n tro family into hardship.Have we thought of d consequencies on d society.Let us rem d issues that led to tis, d govt is spend much fund esp on recurrent exp n nt capital.Orosanya comitee made tis proposal as well as sanusi bt let us nt 4get d amt tis pple re paid monthly, d amt pd 2 their stewards, allowances n money they spent on hotel, travelling etc. In d early investigatn of cbn, certain amount of billion naira was spent on tour within d country n pple re languishing they enjoyin. Now is to throw away pple frm wrk. What we they do with d fund used in paying tis pple and runing d institution.Fuel subsidy fund, hw prudently re they spent even d subsidy reinvestmnt prog hw effective, who re d few beneficiaries,it is nt those who know d ppple that know d pple that know d pple.
