CAN, JNI disagree over FG, Boko Haram peace deal

CHRISTIANS in the 17 Southern states under the aegis of Southern CAN, yesterday, described the recent ceasefire deal reportedly reached between the Federal Government and members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram as a ruse, stressing that such a deal will only be meaningful if the sect had opted to surrender and lay down their arms.

The Jama'atu Nasril Islam, JNI, which is the umbrella association of northern Muslims, however, disagreed with CAN's position describing the ceasefire as a welcome development.

In a telephone interview with the General Secretary, Dr. Joseph Ajujungwa, last night, the region group also condemned the recent killing of 29 students and the burning of their hostel/domitories in Yobe State by hoodlums suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

Southern CAN said the mindless killing of the innocent students and injuring of scores of others including their teachers by Boko Haram is an uncalled for barbaric act and satanic. Dr. Ajujunwa, therefore, called on the Federal Government to ensure that our public institutions especially schools are adequately protected to guarantee the safety of the nation's young ones, noting that the nation had shared too much blood in the last couple of years.

Meantime, the Secretary General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar who spoke on the issue in Kaduna, yesterday, said the gesture was to confirm that Boko Haram was not made up of "ghosts" as once claimed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Abubakar said: "The JNI sees this as a welcome development. We have been asking for this kind of window. It is a big plus for the drive towards peace. This has come to fault those saying that Boko Haram is made up of ghosts. The challenge now is on the Federal Government to take advantage of this move. Government must pursue this proposal with all seriousness and sincerity. This is an opportunity for lasting peace in the country.

"I do not see any reason not to believe that the move by the group is a sincere one. We have become so pessimistic in this country that even when a good thing that will benefit us is coming, we refuse to grab it. I am an optimist and I believe that we are on our way to living cordially like it was in the past."

The truth is such people are not good to live among Normal people, people who can open fire on helpless Children, I don't see any good about this. My heart goes out to the parent of those Children, May GOD Console them.

  5. why cease fire? Have they achieved their dreams? What is the state of things now in the north? Have u removed the president your target? Are ur sponsors tired or dead? Cease fire pays nothing, pls GO ahead with killings of people.! Who is losing? Businesses in your community is suffering. The threat, menance and upheavel cannot be fogotten. Only a fool will not relocate to other part of nigeria and still survive. Whatever you claim that you have which attract people to your town, we can do without. They don't need negotiation of any sort. Niger-Delta had agenda which was presented at the constitutional conference( Resource Control). Unconstitional demands you have been figthing for. Cease fire accord should be critically viewed with every technicality, psychological scruitny, alongside attitudnal change. Because they may have ran short of ammunitions, or want to strategize, invariably penetrate the government and achieve thier stated goal. Government of nigeria be diplomatic in the cause of this.

  6. The Federal Government of Nigeria did proscribed and declare Boko Haram an illegal body and a terrorist set up; why should that so call committee on reconciliation and dialogue with boko haram not disbanded and suspended? GEJ, you should act decisively by suspending that committee and maximise military action on the illegal boko haram as a terrorist group. Pls ACT NOW!

  9. I'm SURPRISED with the NORTHERN ELDERS(NE) welcoming the IDEA of CEASE FIRE.
Hpw wld the(NE) FEEL, if their SONS OPPOSE them as HEAD of the HOME & after FIGHTING(cause them bodily harm) with them 4 yrs, WAKE UP one MORNING am SAY "BABA lets STOP FIGHTING 4 NOW, and then SETTLE" Instead of throwing down their ARMS & BEG BABA for 4GIVENESS.
    I tire 4 this NORTHERN ELDERS O!

  11. I'm surprised & confused about this whole thing. Not long ago GEJ proscribed Book Haram as illegal & an unacceptable terrorist group. We expected that following this development anyone found involved in terrorist activities is supposed to be dealt with as persons going against the law as a deterrent. Reaching a deal with them especially when we don't yet know clearly what their mission is,what they intend to achieve with all d harm they've done to pple. GEJ should get ready to entertain many other terrorist & pseudo-terrorist groups. I hope future offenders be treated likewise . I can foresee serious chaos approaching. FG,don't think you can fool all the pple all the time......Chris
