Bayelsa bans tricycles on highways

Bayelsa State Government has banned tricycles popularly called Keke Napep from plying major roads in the state, saying that their operations constitute nuisance on the roads in the capital city.

The development is coming less than a year after the state government banned the use of commercial motorcycles otherwise known as okada in the capital city, which led to the influx of tricycles into Yenagoa.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mrs. Marie Ebikake, in Yenagoa, said that the ban which takes effect from today (Wednesday) was aimed at reducing the spate of accidents on the roads in Yenagoa.

Ebikake said though the tricycles were free to operate on the adjoining inner streets within the state capital, any one found on the major roads would be impounded.

She said that the restriction to adjoining innner streets was taken to save the lives of residents due to the recklessness of the tricycle operators on the major roads.

She said:  "The tricycles are causing nuisance on our highways, we thought we are done with motorcycles but the tricycles are worse.

Everyday, we get cases of accidents involving tricycles. We want to save lives and property, in as much as we want comfort. Go to the Federal Medical Centre and you will see people maimed and some have lost their lives due to the recklessness of the Keke Napep drivers."
