COMMERCIAL banks in Asaba, Delta State capital, yesterday, closed shop for few hours following strong rumours in the city that armed gangs were threatening to storm the banks, just as courts have been placed under close security watch following Monday’s escape of two condemned robbers from a courtroom.
Although, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme dismissed the speculation of impending attack on banks, bank officials and customers were still gripped with fear, while plain-clothes armed security personnel were found lurking within and outside the bank premises.
Uyabeme told reporters: “Though police learnt that some of the banks did not open due to the rumour, we affirm that it was baseless. We are on top of the situation.”
More armed men to accompany prison inmates
On its part, the Public Relations Officer, PRO of the Nigeria Prisons Service in the state, Uche Mgbakor, told Vanguard yesterday: “Actions are on to make sure that when inmates are taken to court armed men will be dispatched to follow them especially on the cases of high profile inmates. This is to beef up the security of both staff and inmates.”(Vanguard) Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
