Accept Yoruba Leader Or Leave Lagos — Igbo Traders Warned

The traders of Igbo origin operating at the Ladpo Auto Spare Parts Market, Mushin, Lagos have been told to accept Yoruba man as leader or leave the state.

The ordeal was handed down to the protesting traders due to their continued resistance of Alhaji Oladotun Abibu Oki as the Babaloja of the market.

Lamenting their ordeal, the royal father of the market Chief Nwosu told reporters that “99 percent of marketers in Ladipo are Igbo. To be fair to all, he should come and contest if elected he will be accepted. “We appeal to the South East governors, Igbo leaders across the globe to come to our aid. They asked us to go back to our villages, if we are not ready to accept the leadership of Alhaji Oki. We pay our taxes in Lagos and have every right as Nigerians to buy and sell anywhere in the state.”

Meanwhile LACEC Secretary General, Pastor Steve Ijioma told reporters : “There has been controversy over the imposition of Alhaji Oki as the Babaloja. This led to several clashes and it was agreed that Alhaji Oki should restrict his authority in his unit pending when the matter is sorted out. During the environmental sanitation, he encroached on our territory and we resisted. The protest is to pass the message across that we do not want his leadership rather a free and fair election should be conducted. It is a pity that an Area Commander could openly ask us to accept Babaloja or return to our various states.”

LACEC, according to the President General, Comrade Ikechukwu Animalu, is opposed to the imposition of Alhaji Oladotun Abibu Oki because “out of the 34 existing units in the market, Alhaji Oki controls only a unit. There is still an on going battle over his appointment as the new Babaloja. It was his attempt to impose his authority on us that led to the crisis that erupted on Thursday. We demand a formal election, so that the people will decide who their leader will be.

“We also appeal to the police to be fair in this controversial matter and call to order those who openly ordered us to either accept the imposition or return to our various states.”

Stating his part of the story, Alhaji Oki said that he was ready to dialogue with aggrieved members of LACEC to find a way forward. He told Sun: “I was nominated two years ago to be installed the Babaloja of the market.

LACEC through several petitions frustrated that move and the process was delayed. However two months ago, the late Abibat Mogaji finally installed me. To pass their message across they did not attend my installation, which was held in June 27, 2013.”

    3. When yoruba pple begin to do the kind of things Ibos do in business then they surely will be accepted as their leaders in certain areas, especially in business related issues. I think the problem is,on the one side the people on the side of Alh. Oki thing a yoruba is entitled to the benefits accrued to the position & on the side of Ibos, they want someone who will take care of business related issues which they obviously master more than the Yorubas. Finally if we want this our dear Nation to progress,we must remove entirely tribalism from National issues. I also think Ibos should begin to have a rethink about their position in that Entity called Nigeria. North & West,we are discriminated against.Don't people think it's time for us to rediredt our various endeavours towards the EAST.

    1. El- matosky, ( that sounds stupid). The igbos are mere tenants in that market, built by the yorubas.
You must be grateful that your people have a place to sell, since most are illiterates, and would never fit in elsewhere. I guess you are an apprentice to a spare parts dealer. You need to attend adult lessons in the evening. Will do you a lot of good.

  7. Some times I wonder ,how far we have gone with tribal madness, the Hausas want a shariah state, the igbos want to be the president in the next Election ,the news said that 99percent of the market members are Igbo, meaning they are already ruling them selves and was ok with it be4 the new man was imposed on them ,look at what is happening in Our Governors Forum ,and the Onitsha market that was mentioned by Anonn 9:59 and others alike have a little or no number of Yourubas in those markets in the Eastern Nigeria so why the comparison? We cry every day because of the Government and their corrupt practices but these comments show that the best thing we know how to do in this country, is to point accusing fingers on others with out taken a proper look at our self on the mirror and say to our selves,so we always say, as far as it favors us it does not matter what they think is right(SELFISHNESS) in low places .we should not complain if this is how our reasoning have all become, we should all accept the Nigeria as a failed Nation and all go about as if every thing is fine.

  10. To be fair, the Igbos cannot allow a Yoruba or Hausa man to be the chairman of any market unit in their states.
Nobody said they cannot do business but they must accept the Yoruba man as the head of Oladipo Market and allow peace to reign.
Otherwise, let those oppose to this go back to their villages as advised.

  18. Hmm, the truth is that igbos dominate everywhere they go in terms of business this is because they are very industrious and the fact remains that no state can comfortably survive without igbos cos of their busuiness acumem but this case is quite complicated cos they are in yoruba land. I strongly believe they shoud vote for who will be their leader fairly, afterall, they pay taxes and hav equal rights.its high time we nigerians get out of this mentality about region after all obama is black. Its all about competence and leadership capability and not regional sentiments.

  19. TINUBU! Ha. The guy is everywhere waiting to devour the sweat of hard working Nigerians especially igbos. I am sure the 1st Anonymous is an agbero son of Tinubu who has been leaving on the sweat of others. That is why the yoruba man does not like igbos becos they cannot be cowed or intimidated. Imagine Tinubu's mother installed him. Is she the owner of Lagos? who installed her sef? Now his daughter who knows nothing abt the genesis of the market will now start presiding over it and u foolish yoruba illiterates dont seem to see beyond ur nose. Assholes! For ur information, Ladipo was just a street before the igbo man turned it to a money making venture and if they leave it will become just an ordinary street again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That is exactly the Yoruba way. Check out the Agberoes all over Lagos. They so love to reap where they did not sow.

Meanwhile, no Nigerian has a right to lay claims over Lagos or Abuja. These two states are more or less the capitals of Nigeria and a vital representative of thr Nigerian. So don't get it twisted. Every Nigerian has the right to move within these states and operate as it pleases them, as far as they don't break the law.

  21. Is either you people accept or leave Lagos. Would Igbo allow Yoruba or Hausa to buy land talk less of leading a section in Onitsha or Aba?, if you people can under the question, then you can stay but if not you should leave Lagos for us. Dan bansa yanmirin.

  29. Lagos was no man's land untill the europeans came. The earlier inhabitants of lagos were not purely yorubas but people from benin republic. And Lagos was not developed by them, only two groups, namely the federal goverment when it became federal capitals and igbos who transformed through building and business. You guy who not know anything about nigeria shold keep quite. It wrong to impose anybody on the traders, because we are operating democracy. Though ACN governor and Tinubu have shown serious anti-democratic antecedents of hating the ibos by deporting them severally from lagos. secondly using police to beat up and intimidate the ladipo traders of ibo extracts. This goes to all nigerians what we should expect if power goes to these blood sucking APC. God will never allow them succeed. These are bunch of unrepentant tribalist and islamist. That is why they don't care how many lives BH is wasting but to use it push their selfish, tribalistic and islamistic agenda. God deliver Nigeria. They want us to vote for them, so that they will merchandise Nigeria and send any opposition to gas chambers. God will destroy all these supporters and proponents of tribalism and religious extremism.

They are agitating in Lagos because they know the average Yoruba man is too docile to resist "foreign" domination.

  33. Fellow Brothers and Sisters. It's amazing what I am reading on this tread. We all need to ask God for mercy and forgiveness. We need to Love our brothers and Sisters like ourselves. What is the big deal in letting a Yoruba or Igbo man lead if all we want to do is to do legitimate business and show integrity in what we do. It's time to start to respect ourselves. If a Nigerian go to Ghana and do business there, it doesn't matter the number of people, we must abide by the authority governing the Land. Once Trust, Integrity and Ingenuity is the hallmark of our business, it will not matter who leads the market. Since, a Yoruba man cannot go and become the Obi of Onitsha or an Igbo man cannot go and become the Emir of Katsina even if He is so enterprising, this matter of who leads the market nee not become and issue. Except there are selfish motive in view as always the case in this nation. God Bless Nigeria.

  35. The fact remains we are different and more inclined toward our tribe. The underline problem here is greed and corruption. If the so called leader is to be paying for the upkeep of the market from his pocket what you will hear is this..Igbo will say how can I finance a market in Yoruba land and Yoruba man will say "how can I finance a market predominantly occupied by Igbo's".This would degenerate to a level worse than Tokyo of Oyo state issue cause it has ethnic undertone. I wonder how you want to make law for those who you don't speak nor understand their language. And i dont expect an average yoruba guy not feel marginalised..However illetracy is still the reason for this issue. If you feel your tribe is not well represented fight for inclusion clause in constitution and then your tribe would have an upper hand for election or selection. its so simple but too hard a nut for the people call Nigerian

    ReplyDelete
  36. It is not their fault. Yoruba is the most accommodating tribe in Nigeria. We are so accommodating that Igbo propose to rule over us. Can they try that in Hausa, Boko haram land? Won't they bomb their head? It is this to let them know their boundary.

We are all hearing this problem because it is market people but the worst is even happening in public offices all over the country . I join other Nigerians who have been calling for this country to be redefined or be spited if we cannot live together though Nigerians have never lived together .The history is not far-fetched it is written on every Nigerian face that we cannot continue to force ourselves to live together the way oyibo man forced us to live . Large population has been a very big advantage to countries like China ,India , America etc. but ours has be a very big problem .NIGERIANS WE SHOULD BE STUPID ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT NONE US HAS THIS COUNTRY AT HEART , forget about those on top who pretend they love this country well, relief him off his appointment today he will be worse than any of the above who has been talking . Can you just look at our political avenue and see what is happening there every tribe wants their own person to be president . How many Nigerians will from their hearts say oh I love Nigeria , Nigeria is my life like other nationals when we hear them talking . Look at what is happening in the north , it is nothing but expression of some people showing you that they do not need you around or in their place though they are using religion as a cover up . 42. It is not a question of whether it is possible for a Yoruba man to be a leader in Onitsha market but how many yorubas are doing businesses in the east let alone contesting for a particular position in Onitsha or anywhere in the east. Let the so called Alhaji Oki or whatever he calls himself be a bit civilized and allow a democratic process to decide his fate. Leadership should not be a do or die thing rather let the people decide who rules them.

  45. A lot of comments here are riddled with ignorance. Go to every major igbo town, there is always an hausa market typically called "Ama hause" (Hausa neigbourhood), and every Ama-hausa has a "sariki", who is their head. No igbo is ever imposed on them. They even have mosques where they worship freely. Unfortunately, the yoruba man is not particularly interested in business, that is why you dont see them trading in the east. Leadership of the market should be determined by election, and that is what we should preach everywhere, not only when it suits us.

Yaradua/danjuma used obasanjo to destroy Awo again 1979.
Umaru Dikko used Abiola to destroy Awo again in 1983.
Abacha/IBB used Shonekan to destabilise Abiola in 1993.
Yaradua and Kingibe sold abiola after june 12.

IBB/Abdusalam used mustapha to annihilate Abiola in 1998.
Mustapha is now using Fasehun to destroy the epicenter of yoruba solidarity.
El-Rufai/Muazu Aliyu will use Tinubu to rape yorubas come 2015.
