We want Christian Lagos governor in 2015 — Cleric

The Director of Civic and Political Affairs of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland of the Anglican Communion, Venerable Folarin Shobo, has urged Lagos residents to vote in a Christian as governor of the state in 2015.

In a statement on Friday, Shobo said Lagos residents could not afford to continue with the present political arrangement whereby political officers were largely people of a particular faith.
While noting that Governor Raji Fashola has done well in improving on the infrastructure of the state, he said, “It is time for power to shift in the state. It is time for us to have people who will continue to rule with the fear of God and respect for the rule of law.
“There is a strong need for genuine internal democracy among the parties that will produce a credible candidate come 2015.”

Shobo urged Christians in the state to show interest in partisan politics, saying Christians who have a flair for politics should get ready for the 2015 elections.
He however noted that getting political power was not a do-or-die affair, but that Christians need to change the political status quo in the state.
He said, “It is not fair to have a government that is largely tilted to people of a particular religion. Christians over the years have been magnanimous enough. We have worked for people who are not of our faith and we have supported them to be in government. It is now time for us to come out and take the bull by the horns.
“The battle for Lagos State will not come easy. It will take patience, perseverance and strong will. It will take fasting and praying and it will take the readiness of men and women who have interest in politics.”
Shobo argued that politics and religion go hand in hand and called on church leaders to begin to sensitise their members to take up the gauntlet and vie for political positions in the state.
He said it was unfortunate that none of the five people being tipped to succeed Governor Babatunde Fashola is a Christian.
“Asking for a Christian governor in Lagos State at this time is not out of place. It is long overdue and it is time we began to do something about it,” he said.

  1. Shobo, I say to hell with you and your brand of christianity, you are attempting to stir up some religious intolerance in a State that has remained peaceful despite its mixture of diverse religious followers. You should be canvassing for an emergence of a leader who should follow and even surpass the feats of the present governor, instead of being sectarian. Are you wiser than Lagosians who kept voting for people of their choices, who incidentally happen to be Muslims? Lagosians are voting for credible leaders and NOT for religious reasons, after all most of you pastors have been found to be criminals or their sponsors. Do you know, if Muslims want to insist on certain things, this country will just seize to exist? Just one of such is - the Muslim calender. Muslims have been using the Christian (Gregorian) calender without complain. Muslims could insist on the strict adherence to their own calender, then we see how that goes well for us. That Saturday and Sunday are non-working days is non-arguable, these are Jewish and Christian worship days, but the Muslim worship day - Friday is never observed as a work-free day. Although the Muslim never believes that God 'rested' a day after creating the world, so it is of no interest even to Muslims for Friday to be made a work-free day since the Muslim will still go back to his work after Friday worship. Shobo should rather preach to his followers the need to have a credible leader elected instead instigating his followers to be sectarian.

  4. Ooooh man of God! What is this? You are just inciting and inviting anarchy to Lagos through your extremist proposal to Christians. you are also waking Muslims up from their slumber as Muslim clerics have never participated In the Lagos Governor's selection process which apparently has led to the emergence of Christians in Muslim names into political offices. Don't forget that the man in Alausa now called Raji demolished all mosque structures within Alausa secretariat without apology to Muslims. His administration has stopped the use of Hijab by Muslim students in schools, what can Muslims do for him? His wife is a devout Christian, a redeemer for that matter! For me, However, I don't see anything wrong in having a Christian Gov in Lagos but pastor please ensure that the governor will have a devout Muslim first lady for the common balance to be achieved. Thanks

  5. THAT IS A CLASSIC BOKO HARAM SPIRIT TALKING IN YANY THERE: A COUNTRY OF OVER 160 MILLION PEOPLE CAN 'CEASE TO EXIST' IF YOU 'WANT' TO 'INSIST ON SOME THINGS'? SO PEOPLE SHOULD NOT SPEAK THEIR OPINION SO THAT SOME 'YANYS' SOMEWHERE WILL 'NOT INSIST' ON SOME 'THINGS'? WHY CANT PEOPLE REASON, DISCUSS OR EVEN ARGUE WITHOUT RETORTING TO MAKING 'THREAT OF TERROR' TO BACK UP ANY DISCUSSION? IF YOU ARE CONVINCED THAT YOU ARE MAKING A BETTER POINT, THEN GO AHEAD AND STATE IT. EVEN THOUGH I COMPLETELY DISAGRRE WITH THE VENERABLE OPINION,I COMPLETELY SUPPORT HIS RIGHT TO STATE HIS OPINION ABOUT THE ISSUE OR ANY ISSUE FOR THAT MATTER. IF YOU ARE CLAIMING THE MAN 'STIR UP' SOME RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE, MY OPINION IS THAT NOT ONLY ARE YOU 'SUPPORTING' THE 'STIR UP' BY YOUR COMMENT YOU ARE EVEN TAKING IT TO AN INCREASED LEVEL BY DECLARING A POSSIBILITY OF OVER 160 MILLION PEOPLE 'CEASE TO EXIST' SIMPLY 'IF' LESS THAN HALF OF THAT POPULATION 'WANT' OR 'INSIST' ON SOME 'THINGS'TWO WRONGS CAN NEVER MAKE A RIGHT. NOW IMAGINING THAT THE OWNERS OF THIS BLOG DECIDE TO PHASE OUT MAKING OF COMMENT SIMPLY BECAUSE ONE OF THE COMMENT IS UNPRINTABLE, DO YOU THINK PEOPLE LIKE YOU & I CAN MAKE THESE COMMENTS NOW? THE YORUBA HAVE A SAYING: 'ORI BIBE KO NI OOGUN INU RIRUN' TRANSLATION: CUTTING THE HEAD OFF IS NOT THE ANTIDOTE TO STOMACH DISORDER. IF YOU DISAGREE WITH A STATEMENT,STATE YOUR POINTS WHY YOU HAVE A SEPERATE VIEW AND NOT COUNTER BY THE ISSUE OF 'CAPABLE OR POSSIBLE' THREAT. MISTER YANY YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW THAT NOBODY HAS THE 'MONOPOLY OF VIOLENCE'. AND AS FOR GOING TO HELL... TO START WITH APPARENTLY YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN, SO OBVIOUSLY YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHICH TYPE OF CHRISTIANITY WILL TAKE HIM OR ANYBODY TO HELL FOR THAT MATTER.AT THE END OF THE DAY,ONLY GOD ALMIGHTY WILL DETERMINE WHO GOES TO WHERE. MAY BE IT IS BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MY YORUBA PEOPLE INVENTED WORDS LIKE 'IMOLE' 'FORCEFUL KNOWLEDGE'... THINK ABOUT THAT... AND BEFORE YOU ANOTHER THREAT... BYE BYE... ODUN TUTU

  6. When it comes to election in Lagos State, religion does not hold sway at all. People of Lagos are very matured people. They vote for the Party as well as the character of the candidate. Lagosian eyes have been opened. They will not settle with anything less than another 'Fashola'. That's just it.

  7. Well said Odun Tutu, every one should be allowed to express opinions without receiving threats of violence. I encourage rational people to think about these 2 questions: If a religion is truly a religion of peace, how come it breeds so much violent conduct and attitude in its adherents th world over?. .2. If ACN' s 'selection' process into offices is truly blind to religion, how come 70-80percent of its political appointments in the last 8 - 10 yrs have been from one particular religion in a diverse place as Lagos and all 5 potential successors to Fasola are purportedly from dat same religion?. Just think about it and discover truth for yourself..pls dont just make threats. Thank you.
