UNIBEN student was killed in self defence – Police

Edo State Police Command on Tuesday said the slain University of Benin student, Ibrahim Momodu, was killed in self defence.

Ibrahim was killed on May 27 by policemen from the Ogida Division and was buried in suspicious circumstances.

His relatives were not aware of his death until two days later.

The mother of the victim, Osas Okungbowa has petitioned the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, demanding investigation into the killing of her only son.

Students and members of civil society organisation took to the streets of Benin City on Monday, protesting what they called extra-judicial killing.

The police in its first official reaction to the killing said Ibrahim was shot while attempting to bring out a Russian made cut to size double barrel gun.

The police in a statement said, “Operatives at Ogida Division led by the DPO while on a routine patrol within the area intercepted a cyclist and another with an unregistered motor-cycle at Obayuwana junction in SIluko Road.”

“The suspect immediately brought out a Russian made cut to size double barrel gun but policemen noticing his action responded swiftly and shot at the suspect later known to be Ibrahim Momodu who died on his way to the hospital.”

  2. This same DPO was the DPO at Esigie police station 3yrs ago she goes around the streets in the evening arresting indisriminately weilding her pistol using a private Land cruiser jeep. She even arrested a friend of mine who was about crossing to the other side of the road after buying a bag of sachet water and was charged with wandering. She has skeletons in her cupboard

  3. This was a robbery operation carried out by the police. Was the boy having the gun in his pocket? Why was the boy burried in a hurry? Proper investigation may reveal that they robbed the student of some valuables

  4. I ve closely watched the acivities of our so called policemen and i must admit that these idiots are far. Recall the recent london stabbing, the police shot at the suspects did they die? must every bullet from the Nigerian police result to death? Are they not trained?

Believe me, the police is not telling the truth and they know they are not. Murderers

  5. Well, if police kills a civilian and in turn claims self defense, what can we say again when we don,t have any witness. But the big question is 'WHY DID YOU BURY THE STUDENT'. You could leastwise show the public, inform the school or the parents and come out with your usual make believe stories. I hope the Inspector general of police, the uniben authorities , the Edo state state governor the brave Adams Oshiomole will take up this case as in the case of late Mr Oyerinde
