An Abuja Senior Magistrates' Court on Friday sentenced a taxi driver, Chijioke Asogwa of Mararaba, Nasarawa State to two months in prison for causing obstruction.
The presiding magistrate, Mr Aliyu Shafa, who handed down the judgment, however, gave the convict an option to pay N2, 000 as fine.
Shafa said that the court recognised that the convict was a young man and a first offender that deserved the mercy of the court.
"In order to serve as a deterrent to other offenders of like minds, the offence must not go unpunished.''
The magistrate thereby sentenced the convict and ordered that his vehicle be returned to him by the police.
Asogwa, who pleaded guilty to the offence, begged the court for leniency. "I am begging the court to please forgive me.''
Earlier, police prosecutor, David Udeh had told the court that Asogwa was brought to the Wuse Police Station on June 5 by Insp. Philip Maidogo.
Udeh said that Asogwa, the driver of a Nissan Sunny vehicle with registration number XL 914 UWL, drove his car along Herbert Macaulay Way, Wuse on the same day.
He said that Asogwa, while driving his car, obstructed traffic and was arrested by Maidogo.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 39(3) of the Road Traffic Act. (NAN)
