The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party has described the comment of the spokesman for the
state’s chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Joe Igbokwe, on the
Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, as “diversionary and lacking
in merit.”
The party said Maku, who “is a genuine
patriot, untainted in character” did not deserve such scathing comments
from Igbokwe “who has always been known to use abusive languages and
lies which is not what politics is about.”
Igbokwe had reacted to a statement
credited to Maku thatLagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola was doing
nothing. despite strong Federal Government support.
Igbokwe had said Maku was rubbishing the
state because the governor saw through his (Maku) “folly” and refused
to be part of the Good Governance Tour.
But PDP said Fashola’s sudden U-turn was mischievous because he supported the idea at the meeting of the governors.
PDP said, “The idea of the Good
Governance Tour is to showcase dividends of democracy in each state,
especially as delivered by the federal and state governments. By its
rejection of the tour and reaction to the minister’s criticism, the ACN
government has confirmed to us that it is indeed arrogant, non-tolerant
and hostile to constructive criticism.”
The party said rather than the
“unguarded statements” against Maku, the state government should have
used the tour to showcase the “much-touted” developments in the state.
It said, “It is always characteristic of
the ACN leadership in the state to deny the obvious. It is true that
Lagos State enjoys monumental FG’s presence and support. Among many
contributions of the Federal Government is the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge
recently inaugurated. Fashola attributed the successful construction of
the bridge to the Federal Government under late President Musa Yar’Adua.
“One is thus bemused that while the
governor cannot deny the great support of the FG to Lagos, the state ACN
spokesman would always go on a frolic of his own and showcase the
attitude of a man suffering from diarrhoea of the mouth.”
The state PDP said other notable Federal
Government monuments that the state was enjoying were seaports,
airports, railways, the Third Mainland Bridge, Ikorodu Road, Agege Motor
Road, popular Oshodi Oke Bridge and federal medical institutions to
mention a few.
The PDP pointed out that states like
Akwa Ibom, Rivers, CrossRivers, Delta had their own Independent Power
Projects, Airports, and had built more bridges than Lagos without any
tolling.
“We know that the ACN government is only avoiding the Good Governance Tour in order to cover up its inadequacies.
At this jucture, we can only apologise to the Federal Government and Labaran Maku on behalf of the leadership of Lagos ACN.

Fashola's touted achievements cannot stand a rigorous media scrutiny.
ReplyDeleteNow we know that FG was partly instrumental to the Lekki-Ikoyi so-called cable bridge.
