The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended the Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
In a communique issued today at the end of a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC), the party said that on several occasions, Governor Wamakko had ignored invitations and lawful directives of the NWC as well as continued to show complete apathy to the affairs of the party and contempt to an organ of the party.
“Consequent upon the refusal of the Governor to honour yet another invitation by the NWC to appear before it today, Wednesday, June 5, 2013 without any reason, the Committee, in exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 57 (3), 57 (7), 58. 1(c ),(h), (f) and 59 (1),(2), hereby suspends the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko as a member of the party and refers the matter to the appropriate disciplinary committee of the Party,” the statement said.
PDP, which is growing increasingly turbulent, said the measure was in furtherance of the determination of the leadership to enforce discipline at all levels within the party.
It would be recalled that on April 29, the PDP in Rivers suspended the speaker of the House of Assembly and 26 other members for what the chairman, Felix Obuah, described as “insubordination.”
Last week, the NWC suspended Rivers State Governor Amaechi after an emergency meeting of the party National Working Committee, claiming that it was trying to enforce internal discipline. The previous week, Mr. Amaechi had defeated a candidate propped up by President Goodluck Jonathan during an election to pick the chairman of Nigerian governors's forum. His victory led an angry and disappointed Jonathan, in Addis Ababa for the historic 50th anniversary meeting of the African Union, to drink so heavily he was unable to address the event.
