Nigeria moving closer to UN security council seat - Tukur

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, has said Nigeria is getting closer to realising its ambition of being a member of the United Nations Security Council.

Tukur, who stated this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said this was as a result of the support being thrown behind Nigeria by top rated countries within the world body.

He said the level of support from across the globe based on the goodwill commanded by Nigeria was a hint that the attainment of such ambition would be realised under the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Tukur said Nigeria ranked high among the countries jostling for membership of the UN Security Council being a regional power.

He said the country's contributions to the world peace had also become a big consideration by relevant members of the council who, he said, were in support of Nigeria.

The chairman of the ruling party said he had used his business links built over the years to identify the rating of Nigeria in the race among third world countries for membership of the UN Security Council.

"I can say our rating is very high as a regional leader," he added.

He said the ability of Nigeria to cling the ticket to be a member of the World Security Council now depended on the success it would make from its current war against terrorism, while also maintaining its political stability.

According to him, the rest of the world, most especially friends of Nigeria, have been eager to have the country surmount its security challenges and while also solidifying its economy with political stability.

Since becoming the PDP Chairman, Tukur said he had made official trips to Britain, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, South Africa and others, while holding discussions with diplomat in all the countries.

The chairman affirmed that since he came into office, he had been making efforts to facilitate the chances of Nigeria becoming a member of the UN Security Council, an opportunity he said, would soot-up the ranking of the country in the comity of world nations.

He said the promises of assistance from friends of Nigeria required that the country got its acts right in the areas of deepening democracy, raising stronger economy while ensuring that Nigeria remains a peaceful nation by surmounting its security challenges.
