A woman who abandoned her baby girl at a backyard of an apartment in Kuje, Abuja, said she left the toddler to her fate as she had no job or means for the baby’s upkeep.
She said when she kept the baby in a carton inside the bush, she did not go away but hid nearby to know who would pick the baby so she could “do a follow-up”.
“All along, I was monitoring the baby’s situation, I know those who picked the baby and took her to the police,” Abdulazeez said.
“I was listening to their conversation from my hideout, I even followed them from a distance when they were taking my baby away,” she said.
She now solicits public assistance to take care of the baby.
Abdulazeez, who turned up at the police outpost in Gwagwalada on Friday to claim ownership of the baby, added: “I told the police that I would take care of my baby if only the government would assist me with a job or a trade no matter how small,’’ she said.
The Police Area Command in Gwagwalada, FCT, Yahaya Musa, had on Friday declined comments on the matter, saying that he was not authorized to speak to newsmen on the matter.
Hanatu Turu, Head of the Social Welfare Department of Gwagwalada Area Council, said that she was aware of the incident. She said police should be allowed to conclude their investigations.
Abdulazeez was said to have been delivered of the baby girl on June 13 and secretly put her in a carton and took her to a nearby bush behind her house at night, where she abandoned the baby.
A resident in the area, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that Abdulazeez is her neighour, adding that it was the cry of the baby that drew the attention of passers-by who later took the baby to the police outpost. Is this supposed to to a replica of Moses's story in the bible? Thank God she's even human enough not to have killed the innocent baby. Its better one have a good and solid plan ahead before taking to baby making. God gave you the baby 'cos you asked for it when you had an unprotected sex with a man but don't expect the same God to come down and take care of your baby for you. He expects you to be up to the task before asking for it. Please if you are not ready for it, don't ask for it!
ReplyDeleteThe Nigerian government should take the blame in this situation.
ReplyDeleteOur youths in Nigeria are faced with high unemployment rate. Corruption has caused mayhem in the society. Yet our leaders are not doing enough to resolve the hopeless situation.
No parent would like to throw their child away. Many people who have not suffered any hardship in getting food and accommodation can easily castigate this woman. God gave this child because he knew he provided adequate resources for the country to survive the people. Unfortunately, the greedy leaders among us have depleted the opportunities available in favour of their personal gain.
The Nigeria government should clear the shame quickly and provide help to this woman and her baby rather than more victimization. The woman and her baby are victims of the Nigeria corruption and they must not suffer while a selected few enjoy.
No baby is born a mistake. God provided them as blessing to their parents, families, the nation, the continent and the world.
