The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced a newly adopted strategy that would ensure that any person caught using the mobile phone while driving, would no longer be fined but immediately taken to court and jailed.
Corp Marshal, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka said other offences like speed driving, dangerous overtaking and overloading would equally attract court action instead of the usual fines.
The FRSC boss, who was speaking at a news conference in Abuja, said these new measures are part of a newly launched campaign to reduce the increased spate of road crashes in the country.
Commercial bus drivers are now expected to install speed limit devices in their vehicles so they henceforth should not exceed 100km per hour.
National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) however admitted that some drivers are guilty of the aforementioned road accident causing crimes.
The FRSC says it is partnering with several organizations including oil companies to fulfill its promise to make Nigerian roads one of the safest in the world by the year 2020. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Well, traffic offence is not a criminal offence and therefore even if the FRSC goes to court, it does not necessarily meant that the person must go to jail 'cos there is no law in Nigeria that banned citizen from making calls while driving unless if FRSC wants to constitute itself into judiciary. I supposed FRSC is becoming sychologically derailled. The Orosanya report recommended the scrapping of FRSC and very soon, they'll all be turned into VIO while the Nigeria Police continue with their job as empowered by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteI pity you. Dont you know that road accidents kill faster than HIV/AIDs? People with this disease still leave longer but road accidents has killed so many Nigerians. All what FRSC are doing is to safe our lives. So, I will support them. Overspeeding, making calls or receiving calls while driving, not taking cognisance of road signs etc kill people. Pls lets support this good development so that we can see our childrens children alive. God bless Nigeria.
DeleteI hope this law is not just for d ordinary nigerian? D rich shud also cry.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 3:41 I think you are among the culprits when the law catch up with you then speak your yeye grammer and nuseating expression.
ReplyDeleteIt is evident that some people will ordinarily resists changes even if it will benefit large chunk of the population. I agree that that the case of Calling while driving, over speeding etc must be tried by a court of competent jurisdiction but to say that FRSC intends to turn itself to a court is an aberration. FRSC was established by a well documented and gazetted Act, therefore, the agency is still within the law that established it if it comes up with strategy to stem the spate of avoidable accidents that claimed so many innocent lives in our country. I am in full support of the plan.
