FG criminalises unauthorised use of siren, others

The  Federal Government has directed all its functionaries to henceforth comply with the ban on unauthorised use of siren, covered number plates and unregistered vehicles, saying it portends danger for national security.

Consequently, the government has directed security agencies to arrest any official involved in such act.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, according to a statement by the Director of Communication in his office, Mr. Tope Ajakaiye, issued the directive in a circular to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.

He said, “Such acts portend grave danger for national security, especially in view of intelligent reports indicating that men of the underworld also indulge in these unlawful acts to perpetrate heinous crimes.
“Directives have been issued to the Nigeria Police to apprehend any government official found engaging in such practices for appropriate prosecution.”

Meanwhile, the HOS has stressed the need to revisit the age-long values and code of ethics guiding the conduct of civil servants.

Aji, in another circular to all MDAs, said the decision was in continuation of the desire to reposition the civil service for effective service delivery.

He listed the values and ethics as discipline, integrity, moral rectitude, political neutrality, loyalty and patriotism, courtesy and politeness.

Others are modesty, tact and industry, tidiness in work environment and decency in dressing, probity and accountability and promptness in service delivery.

He called on civil servants to “ensure efficient service delivery and display professional discipline in the discharge of their responsibilities in order to enhance public confidence.”

The HOS had earlier this week banned the conferment of chieftaincy titles and “other sundry awards” on civil servants until after their retirement or disengagement from service.

This came two weeks after the civil service criminalised private practice and warned against ownership of private enterprises, except farming.

  1. This siren and driving against traffic syndrome by government officials and the various security organizations as well as bullion vans are really a menace and quite shameful acts. There has been several orders in the past to curb these, but those who are to enforce this ban (the police), happen to be the very violator of it. A bullion van, we all know, is designed for maximum security for cash conveyance in the municipal areas and cities without the need for an accompanying police escort or the need to drive recklessly on the road, but what do we have with these bullion vans operators is appalling. They are reckless, inconsiderate to other road users.

  2. One very effective ways of really effecting any law or order, is to actually get the masses involved. How, the principle of 'citizen arrest" should be developed and implemented - this is a system whereby every citizen is empowered to accost any person, (law enforcement persons inclusive), seen to be doing an unlawful thing and tell such a person that he or she is committing an offense against the laws of the country and make such reports to the nearest law office. There could as well be a website to forward detail photo and video footage of such breaches if the citizen has the capacity to get such footage, this is an IT age where every phone has such capabilities. Unless the masses are empowered to be guidance of the law, there can be no proper enforcement of these laws if left in the hands of the same clique who were supposed to enforce the law, but often go against it.
