Confed Cup ouster: You don’t experiment on a global stage, Ezeugo tells Keshi

FORMER Super Eagles player, Emeka Ezeugo has said  that although the Eagles were wasteful in front of goals during their Confederations Cup outings he never expected them to pull any surprise against world champions Spain and Uruguay, the South American champions.

Ezeugo said that not in his wildest dream did he expect the Eagles to get any result from Uruguay and Spain.

Rhetorically, he said. "did anyone expect that Nigeria would have beaten Uruguay, Spain or win the Confederations Cup? I mean the result was expected. What happened,  happened. The lesson  we have to learn from it is that we need to come back and develop our football. The bitter fact remains that Spain are ahead of us. Europe is better in football than Africa.

"Spain are European and World Champions, they have a programme and a philosophy that internationally speak volumes. If that match is played 10 times we will not win  because what we have is obvious. We have to look at the strength of the game and do  analysis of the team,  assess their strengths  and their weaknesses. If we check all these, you'll see that Spain were miles ahead of us ".

He reasoned that a championship of such magnitude was not meant to serve as a testing ground for inexperienced players. He singled out Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi as the only outstanding player in the Nigerian team.

Continuing, he said, "You don't experiment when you're playing with a world champion, you  don't take inexperienced  players to go and play in the global sphere  against the world champions. they were overwhelmed by the sight of the world stars like iniesta and xavi. rather than play their game they were admiring them".

  2. What we need now is to encorage Keshi. He has tried. I have not in the recent times seen ayn Nigerian coach who was bold enough to go for new materials. They always use finished product players from foreing coaches. Keshi did a new thing and brought us the nations cup.
The Federation Cup was different. He had a team that was injury hit and were under pressure from other competitions before the Fed Cup.
Williams and other people calling for Keshi outster surely have some ulterior motives.
Uruguay was not better although they won the match.

  3. Keahi has a lot of room for improvement. What he needs now is encouragement. I have not in recent times seen any Nigerian coach that is so technical and tactical. He wasinjury hit and under stress from other competitions in the Conf Cup.
Williams and others calling for foreign coaches are not living in reality. Maybe he has one or two things to share with foreign coache.
Keshi should be encouraged. I'm personanally proud of this breed of eagles. They have a bright future which should not be truncated by short sighted people.
