Lagos State Government says it has put strategies in place to tackle floods and related challenges in the state.
The government said it was taking predictions by meteorologists that more rains were likely to be recorded this year seriously.
It added that since Lagos is a coastal state, it was susceptible to flooding like all coastal states across the world.
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, who spoke on Wednesday in Alausa, explained that one of the strategies to prevent flooding was the deployment of resident engineers and drainage maintenance officers to tackle flood-related challenges in the 57 local governments and council development areas of the state.
Bello said, “The phone numbers of these officers have also been made public to afford residents the opportunity to call them for complaints on drainage challenges with a view to proffering solutions.
“Predictions by meteorologists are that more rains are likely to be recorded this year, and as a responsible and proactive government, the Babatunde Fashola administration has put in place measures to reduce the incidence of flooding in the state to the barest minimum as global climatic events have made all coastal states across the world susceptible to flooding.
“These resident engineers are expected to interact with community leaders, residents associations and community development associations. They will also get familiarised with the drainages and canals in the localities.”
Bello said other anti-flooding programmes of the government were the maintenance, cleaning, dredging and enlightenment campaign, which would be all year round.
He urged Lagosians to call the telephone numbers of the engineers and maintenance personnel to report issues of blocked drains and canals as well as other flood-related challenges.
