A senior official of the Nigerian Prisons Service in Delta State has been arrested for allegedly running an illegal university in the state.
This came as no fewer than 600 illegal schools have also been uncovered.
A team of officials of the National Universities Commission, NUC, accompanied by men of the ICPC had, last Thursday, in Asaba, stormed the illegal university where the prisons official who is the Programme Director was whisked away along with other staff.
The illegal Imo State University, Asaba satellite campus began operation in 2008.
The Programme Director of the illegal university (names withheld) admitted that they were asked to close down since last year but insisted that they were no longer admitting fresh students but only keeping on to graduate the old intakes.
Meantime, the State Commissioner of Education (Basic and Secondary), Professor Patrick Muoboghare shocked reporters, weekend, when he announced that a total of 600 illegal schools operated by private owners had been uncovered.
The commissioner said the discovery followed “my ministry’s surveillance which is aimed at establishing the correct and current operational and official status of institutions.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
