State of emergency is a setback to Nigeria’s democracy – Northern youths, lament

Northern youths, Tuesday, lashed out at the Federal Government for slamming state of emergency on three northern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, describing the move as punitive and a serious setback to democracy.

They contended that the declaration of emergency rule in the affected states did not only negate the recent amnesty committee to dialogue with Boko Haram members but equally showed that the government was insincere in raising the committee in the first place.

This position was shared by the Presidents of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima and his Arewa Youth Forum, Alhaji Gambo Gujungu, in separate interviews with newsmen

Shettima, who described the action of the government as a ploy to further humiliate and expose the people of the north to avoidable hardship, regretted that the administration had continued to take actions that deny the people the true benefits of democracy.

The ACF leader, who questioned why Bayelsa State was not included on the list despite the large number of policemen killed by kidnappers and militants in recent weeks, noted that the action was deliberately taken to punish the north.
On the other hand, Gujungu noted that the President should have adopted a political approach to resolve the insurgency problem rather than apply the stringent rule, which he noted, would lead to serious suffering on the part of the citizens of the three states.

“The emergency rule declared in the three states is unfortunate, politically-motivated and totally uncalled for,” he noted.

  1. Yerima Shettima and his Arewa Youth Forum are all fools. You people are already 4 generation backward through the activities of boko haram yet you are condemning state of emergency. Am not too sure that you people are not member of boko haram self.

  3. I am a Hausa Muslim from the North.I don't have to read what you wrote to codem you the heading is enouh for me. The critical situation we Northerners find ourselves long calls for declaring war in the North not simple state of emergency that may not work. If I am in the position of Jonathan, I will seek for all necessary supports locallu and internationally to drop all the Governors and replace them with Military Administrator to the time when North reverts to the peaceful zone it was. This clearly shows you don't have the feeling of Bags, Bama and other places killings, mascres and distructions. Killing of Mohd Shuw, Girgiri Gashua and the rest are not your concern.

    1. Selfish people. The chicken has come home to roast, its called blowback. Is it only northerners lives that matter to you? If it was only southerners that where still being killed you would not have bothered as I see you did not mention southern mass killings. We are tired of dealing with parasites that keep setting us back while we pay for you unproductive people with our blood and prosperity.

  6. The leadership of those Northern youth groups, I am afraid have been hijacked by pro Islamic militancy, reprsented by Al- qaeda, Taliban, Boko Haram, etc. Little wonder, they dislike any measure against murderous 'Jihadist' militancy.

  13. A positive step done at the wrong time. Mr. President, why wait till now before declaring the State of Emergency on these states? I have always been your critic but this time, you have done the right thing. He (GEJ), should be ready to declare State of Emergency on any other state where there are wasting of human lives.

Well I will advice the Hausas to try and educate their Almajiris and housed their beggars instead of abusing Jonathan. They are littering everywhere in the country with their Almajiris and beggars, we're tired of their race.
