Commandant of the Armed Forces Command
and Staff College, Air Vice Marshal Effiong Osim, on Friday said the
twin bombs that rocked the St. Andrews Military Protestant Church, which
led to the death of many worshipers and personnel of the military in
the cantonment was a “special bomb blended with chemical and pellet.”
The church, which is located close to
the officers’ quarters in the cantonment, was attacked by suicide
bombers last year, killing many and injuring scores of others.
The Commandant made the disclosure when
the members of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful
Resolution of Security Challenges in the North led by it Chairman,
Tanimu Turaki, visited the cantonment on a facts finding mission on
Friday.
Osim told the committee members that
the bomb was not designed to pull down the church, but contained sharp
pellets blended with chemical.
According to him, once the pellets come
in contact with a person, it would just peel the skin of the victim to a
high degree of burns, adding that it was such contact that killed one
of the officers in the cantonment.
He said, “The bomb that hit this church
was a special bomb; it was not designed to pull down the structure of
the church. It is a kind of bomb that contains dangerous chemical and
pellet that could fly long distance once it is detonated.
“And once the pellet touches the victim, it is instant death or the skin would begin to peel to a high level degree of injuries.
“This is what killed one of our officers because he was standing some few distances from the scene of the incident.”
