Reps approve 14 years imprisonment for same sex marriage in Nigeria

The House of Representatives yesterday Thursday May 29th approved 14 years imprisonment for persons who contracted same sex marriage in the country.

This was sequel to a clause-by-clause consideration of a Bill for an Act to prohibit marriage or union entered between persons of same sex, at the Committee of the Whole.

“Marriage or civil union entered between persons of same gender shall not be solemnised in any place of worship, either church or mosque or any place in Nigeria,” it said.

Introducing the bill, Rep. Albert Sam-Tsokwa ( PDP-Taraba) said that it sought to achieve a far reaching objective by outlawing same sex marriage and provide punishment for offenders.

It also set out a 10-year sentence for “any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’’.

“Any persons or group of persons that administers, witnesses, screen and shields the solemnisation of same sex marriage in Nigeria on conviction, will be liable to 10 years imprisonment.’’

It would be recalled also that the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had warned that his country would consider withholding aid from countries that did not recognise gay rights.

In Nov. 2011, the senate approved the bill that would make same-sex marriages punishable by up to 14 years for the couple and 10 for anyone abetting such unions.

The bill is expected to be sent to the Senate for concurrence.

  4. There is no doubt that Nigeria is on the path to greatness. If we can stand up for the right thing without the fear of what the "big-brother-nations"like USA, Britain, etc are threating, then there is hope for a better future. I wish to congratulate the house of Reps for this bold decision and ask them to do more. There many more controversial aspects of our constitution that need this kind of bold and clear decision. E.g If Nigeria will be a true secular state, then anything that has to do with sharia law and sharia court should be removed from our constitution. Until we are able to take the bull by the horn on this matter and other similar issues, we may not be able to go far as a Nation. All lesbian and gay sorry for you. You better check out now before the law chatch up with you. I love Nigeria. I long live Nigeria.

  8. Nigeria is in no position to address moral issues when the nation is perishing from unabridged corruption, joblessness, tribalism and incompetence, among other vices. The National Assembly, 99% of whom are nothing but common thieves have the nerves to worry about who is gay and who is not. What is killing the nation, out-of-control corruption or homosexuality? Do you know how many people perish each day in that country as a result of the corruption of our governors, lawmakers, leaders, etc? That's where our priorities should be focused, not on making laws about gay people. What a bunch of non-thinkers!!

  17. Thank God that after 2 full years of the Senate taking a very bold and patriotic stand on this, the House of Reps finally saw reason to join. We had feared that David Cameron may have pumped money from the British treasury to them to kill the bill as he had done in a number of African countries. We await President Jonathan to quickly endorse this bill into full fledged law and send law enforcement agents to close down all those evil gatherings that nick-name themselves "gay churches" in Ikeja and Victoria Island. Our nation shall not habour evil. Corruption is next to be blown out.

  19. This is now what Nigerians and the teaming jobless youths and graduate needs now amidst the economic hardship in this country...why did the national assembly not approve the stipends recommended for unemployed graduates? Why? And why have they not repealled the section of the penal code that sees corrupt public office holder walk away after looting our treasury instead of the 750,000:00 bail terms like that of the pension thief and the rest of them, what we have in the NA are bunch of selfish and devilish idiots, instead you spend quality time and collect siting allowance approving things that almost have no impact on our economic lives, I am not in support of same sex marriage anyway but we have more pressing issues which is poverty...poverty.....poverty and this has a multiplier effects....it leads to criminality, it leads to insurgency and it will lead to revolution if not checked...this is a signal to the leaders....
