Over 180,000 Teens Living With HIV In Nigeria

More than 180,000 teenagers are living with HIV in Nigeria, the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) said.

The latest figure was released during a national dialogue on adolescents living with HIV in Nigeria, Xinhua news agency reported.

Although Nigeria has carried out much prevention work for youths, more work is needed to address the needs of adolescents living with HIV.

The dialogue was organised by the Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA) in collaboration with UNICEF and non-governmental organisation National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

  1. it simply means that Nigeria unofficially hsa more than 180,000 teens living with HIV and it highly important that we need to pay serious attention to prevention programs, most nigerian youth are not deeply informed about the consiquencies of HIV infection. most service provider in fight against HIV/AIDS are paying so much attention to treatment rather than paying equal attention to prevention programmes. counseling is no longer effective as most agencies are grappling with lack of fund to train new counselors and re-train the old ones. with these figure it seems we are losing the gains attained in the past and i would be a colosal waste of time and resources if this trend is not nipped in bud fast.
poverty is also contributing massively to the problem of increasing number teenagers living with HIV couple with the reduction in pepfar funding and lack of clear direction on issues surounding HIV intervention fund by the federal government except depending on foreign funders is nothing but disaster with increasing tenacity to explode.
