Kelvin Ighodalo |
Some Nigerians poured out their minds on the recent 45-year jail term given to 31-year-old Kelvin Ighodalo for stealing a N50,000 phone belonging to Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola
‘Justice is on sabbatical’
My opinion on the sentence handed to Ighodalo is simply that of sarcasm. How can stealing a phone attract that length of imprisonment. Even if he is a thief and fraudster, 45 years jail term is simply illogical. It says a lot about the country we are in. Pension-thieves and rogues are however given the opportunities to return a percentage of their loot. In Nigeria, justice is on sabbatical — Paul Onanuga
‘We have bigger thieves’
This can’t be compared to those who steal from the country’s coffers. They should equally serve the same punishment. He should have been given a maximum of seven years with proper rehabilitation — Steve Jebose
‘It’s not fair’
I don’t think that it is a fair judgment, 45 years’ imprisonment for stealing just a phone worth N50,000? Isn’t that outrageous? How about the real big thieves in government? How many of them were really sentenced to jail? A large percentage of our governors have stolen so much of Nigeria’s money. They should be the ones to be sent to jail. The man who stole the phone should be given a jail term equivalent to his crime. For me, 45 years is not fair! I wish someone who thinks straight could look critically into this unfair judgment — Adeyinka Oni
‘Our legal system is weak’
Injustice is in Nigeria and God is watching. All I can say is that there is injustice in Nigeria, only the poor are treated rigidly. Does it mean there is no other minor punishment that could have been given to him? What I don’t understand is this: Was he punished for the crime or was he punished because of the personality he chose to mess with? It shows that our legal system has become weak and partiality is the order of the day — Bose Omobomi
‘We need divine intervention’
We need divine intervention in this nation. This is the time when men need to ask God to take over and uproot every root of evil in the land and our judicial system. No political party can salvage this nation, not even the planned merger. He is still the same God and if only we can turn to Him in true repentance, we will salvage our land and judicial system — Kunle Akinde
‘Crime is crime’
He didn’t only steal the governor’s phone but also used it for impersonation and fraud. That’s a crime to me — Tosin Ayodele
‘Governor should reconsider’
The punishment is not fair. At least the phone has been retrieved. Why give him 45 years? We should learn to pity others. Though stealing is a crime, the governor should give the judgment some thought. — Jaiyesimi Ibukun Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteto me Aregbesola is not fair at all, d jail sentence is too long, for God's sake by den he will be 76 or he may even die there, pls if sometin can b done let dem do it fast, at least reduce it. We all hav done worst tins in d sight of God but i understnd in nijia we r unda law.
ReplyDeleteThis is outrageous! It does not make any sense. This is a country where education is not valued and honour is a by-gone. The most celebrated are the most corrupt of all. I really hope their children can have a hiding place in the impending revolution. JUSTICE IS DEAD.

ReplyDeleteAregbe himself should go ahead and give him a state pardon right away and maybe a job to boot if he hasnt any. Hang on a sec,....did I just say pardon? Amnesty more like it...
ReplyDeleteHonestly this is not good. Its like asking the guys to pay back a loan of 50,000 naira for 45 years at the rate of 750 naira per year. Naija system of justice is bad.
ReplyDeleteCan somebody get my aregbesola co taxt so i xan start paying 1,112 naira per year for the next 45 years.
ReplyDeleteWhat we should know is Dat this judgement is in 2 Parts. Stealing a phone and Defrauding Pple with it Even while in prison. Sentiments apart , the judgement is fair and Above all the guy will spend 10 years for the sentences are to Run concurrently. Also, pls dnt Blame the gov , he didnt sentence the Guy. Its Against the State and d Guy. A crime is a Crime .
ReplyDeleteMini Hell fire is what Naija is like I always post for those who always read on my facebook page. the verdict was totally inbalance for such crime. Logically that kind of crime doesn't answer to that kind of offence , is totally injustice but is only Allah that can vindicate the victim. Some of our officials steals billion of naija money and no 1 is there to declare dem 45 yrs improsonment, humm naija, footstool of satan.

ReplyDeleteThe sentences is too long, Haba! Nigeria we hail thee!
ReplyDeletesomebody stole a phone of 50,000 naira and they sentenced him to 45years, what about the thieves we have, are you not a thief? What is 50,000 compared to the money you and others have been stealing? You governors are the thieves, all you do is fraustrate the citicezs. God will judge both you and that your bribed judge.. Idiots
ReplyDeleteWhere are d likes of Alams,Olabode and other day-light criminals who have wrecked dis country just with biros. How many years did they spend in jail? Nigeria's judicial system is in mess. We must learn to stand up against such ill structured system that only favour d rich, instead of being d last hope of d common man. Nonsense judicial system! Bigger thieves!!
ReplyDeleteWe need to understand the judgement, the guy is spending 10yrs in prison concurrently. The gov did not jail him.I understand the view of Nigerians, but will cannot because of the criminal leaders in our country continue to allow criminals in this country. If you have ever experience thieves in your apartment, you will understand better that these people are deadly at the point of operation. everyone that is embezzling the money of this country will pay with there blood. But truth to be told, the judgement is 10yrs concurrently.
ReplyDeleteIf all legal issues are handle according to LAW which is equity and justice then i dont hv problem with this. But in nigeria it is the opposite. If not for corrupt practices that is so rampant in the country by the officials in positions, probably this guy would not hv been a victim of this. I pray for Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteThe boy cant go and steal in the governors house or office. Where did they meet? ACN who are now HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVIST so what are we expecting from u on this issue? Bcos its UNFAIR & UNACCEPTABLE. D BIG THIEVES are walking freely.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sentence makes me question the Governors influence on the judge and his integrity. We know that this is not justice. When amnesty is being discussed in connection with Boko Haram and MASSOB..a judgment like this inpugns on our sanity. Nigeria has to change.....
ReplyDeleteWhy are Nigerians in haste to condemn, I have to ask questions before I can comment. And after reading the comment above I was shocked. Yes, he stole a phone worth N50,000 for a new one. But he duped Owa of Obokunland N500,000 and another friend of Aregbe N200,000. He was being jailed for scamming/fraud (that only is 21 years imprisonment.) not for pick-pocketing (community service). Pls, let's get our facts straight before we condemn people.
ReplyDeleteThough with recent judgement by our judges this is too much when people that massacre other people pensions are left to go scot-free.
