NDLEA intercepts cocaine from Brazil

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted 3.9kg of cocaine stashed in female handbags and folders brought into Nigeria by a traveller at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

28-year-old Osunwa Chukwuejwu, who was also arrested by officials of the agency, brought in the drug-loaded goods on Wednesday.

According to the spokesperson for the NDLEA, the bags and folders must have been factory-fitted with the drugs as the narcotics could only be revealed after the bags were slit open.

Ofoyeju said, “The drugs were discovered during an inward screening of Emirate passengers from Brazil at the MMIA.

“The report from NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the suspect wanted to abandon the bags and flee before he was apprehended.”

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Chukwuejwu became fidgety when he noticed the security officials at the arrival hall but was caught when he made a dash for the door.

Curious officials reportedly interrogated him and discovered that he had a luggage. When the bag was identified and searched, 3.860kg of powdery substance, which tested positive for cocaine was discovered.

“Findings revealed that Chukwuejwu actually sells female hand bags and shoes at Bakasi Market in Aba. He said he agreed to smuggle the drug because he needed money to enlarge his business,” Ofoyeju said.

“I am a trader living in Aba. I was contracted to bring the bags for a fee. Upon my arrival, I was afraid of arrest and wanted to leave the bags at the arrival hall when I was invited for an interrogation. I smuggled the drug because of money,” the suspect said in his statement to the agency.
