NCC Moves To Curb MTN’s Market Dominance

Nigeria’s telecoms regulator has ordered South African mobile operator MTN to charge customers the same rate whether calling rival operators or other MTN users, in order to reduce its market dominance.

MTN has 44 per cent of the mobile phone market in Africa’s second biggest economy and charges its customers three times more to call rival operators than for calls between MTN users, the Nigerian Communications Commission said.

“This is indicative of the likely establishment of a calling club for MTN subscribers,” NCC said in a statement on its website yesterday

“The tariff for onnet (calling MTN users) and offnet (calling other operators) will be the same, and subject to periodic review,” the regulator said. It said changes would apply from May 1.

I wonder if the NCC is monitoring them so that, they won't increase the price of their on-net calls to that of the of-net calls instead of the other way.

  4. Anonymous 1:25PM, i think you are absent minded. This MTN was the company that sold SIM at N50,000, are you now telling Nigerians that they wont make it if they regulate the onnet and offnet tariff. We should not deceive ourselves, the tariff in Ghana is even cheaper than Nigeria. Afterall, they are not the onle telecom company that is affected.
