The Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa, and some agencies will enjoy 24 hours uninterrupted power supply from August.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Taofiq Tijani, announced this at the weekend.
He said the 10.4MW Alausa Independent Power Plant (IPP) would be ready in three months.
Tijani said the IPP would end the use of
power generating sets in the secretariat and its environs, adding that
it would run on natural gas.
The inauguration of the power plant would be the third.
The government earlier inaugurated the
12.15MW Akute power plant and 10MW Island power plant, which serve the
State Water Corporation, Lagos Island street lights, courts and
hospitals.
The commissioner said the Lagos Island power project would be expanded to cater for more government facilities.
He decried the increase of tank farms in Apapa without requisite permit, saying they pose security risk to residents.
Tijani said the governor has set up a
committee to look into the issue, adding that the government would soon
clamp down on the owners of the illegal farms.
He said the government has taken
measures to avert a repeat of the gas explosion that rocked MRS Tank
Farm in Apapa early this year.
The commissioner said the committee was looking at relocating some of the farms.
He said the ministry would scrutinise
the documents of the operators, such as approval to construct from the
Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development; police
authorisation; Federal/State Fire Service permit; Department of
Petroleum Resources (DPR) license; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
report and perimeter survey.
Tijani said plans have been concluded to
establish a Geodynamics Centre to detect possible occurrence of natural
disasters, such as earth tremors, earthquakes, ocean surges and
flooding, among others.
