Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko
Al-Makura, has denied that he joined the Ombatse cult before he became
the state governor in 2011.
The governor said this in a statement
by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Press Affairs, Mr. Sani
Mairiga, on Thursday in Abuja.
The Ombatse cult has been accused of killing about 50 policemen in Lakyo, Nasarawa State, on May 7.
The statement denied allegations that Al-Makura was a member of the Ombatse cult before parting ways due to its activities.
He said, “The allegations are baseless and unfounded; it is strictly an Eggon affair.
“You cannot be a member or initiated
into the Ombatse cult if you are not from the Eggons. They are trying to
give a dog a bad name just to hang it.’’
Al-Makura said he did not have anything
personal against the Eggons other than the activities of some of their
kinsmen in the Ombatse cult.
Al-Makura decried the activities of the
cult, saying the issue was a source of concern to him and to the entire
peace-loving people of the state.
He said the Eggons were not
discriminated against as claimed, adding that there were a good number
of them holding important positions in the state.
He said “Among the 17 commissioners in
the cabinet, three are Eggon, two Permanent Secretaries, the Head of the
State Civil Service, the Special Adviser on Security Matters are all
from Eggon.
“Other positions they hold include the
Director-General, Adult and Non-Formal Education Commission, Managing
Director, Nasarawa Investment Board and the Head of the state Primary
Heath Care Development Agency.
“These appointments are enough evidence to show that Tanko Al-Makura is running an all inclusive government without bias.’’
The statement added that the activities
of Ombatse militia were impeding the development of the state since
November 2012 that the militia began its “nefarious acts of killing and
destruction.’’
It said those found culpable of the
killings and those disturbing the peace of the people of the state would
face the full wrath of the law.
It called on the people to be
law-abiding and cooperate with the government in its effort to take the
state to the Promised Land.
The statement also called on politicians
eyeing the 2015 electoral positions to stop playing politics with human
lives as “power belongs to God; and He bestows it on whosoever He
wishes.’’
