According to the DSS, the suspect, Adelola Tamunotonye Olaore, alias 'General Africa', 29, had called Senator Aloysius Etok and introduced himself as an assassin paid by the governor's aides to kill him (Etok) because of his refusal to concede the Senate seat to the governor in 2015.
Etok and Akpabio are currently locked in a spat over the senatorial seat. Akpabio had claimed that he was instrumental to the emergence of Etok as a Senator in 2007 and that he would take over from him when he completes his two terms as governor in 2015, an ambition, which irks Etok.
Etok was recently quoted as saying that the senatorial seat was not vacant, as he would still run in the next election, a development that angered the governor and his supporters and triggered a fierce media war.
Apparently trying to exploit the rift between the two political leaders for pecuniary gains, Olaore, who claims to be an ex-Niger Delta militant from Bayelsa State, reached out to Etok and asked him to pay him an undisclosed sum of money to spare his life and reconcile him with the governor.
Afraid that his life could be terminated prematurely, Etok quickly reported the matter to the DSS and shouted aloud that the governor was after his life. In return, the DSS asked him to play along with the 'assassin" and to invite him to Abuja for further discussion on the peace move.
Etok is said to have lodged the suspect in an Abuja hotel from where he was eventually picked up by DSS operatives on April 29, 2013.
The Deputy Director of Public Relations of the DSS, Marilyn Ogar, while parading the suspect, said on interrogation, the man claimed that he had neither met Governor Akpabio nor any of the aides he mentioned as having sent him to go after Etok's life.
Ogar said the suspect had also confessed that he had never met the Commissioner for Environment and the Chairman of Etinan Local Government, Kenneth Okon, alias Wayas, who were mentioned as those who sent him to kill Etok.
Ogar averred that, "from the forgoing, Olaore hatched the phantom assassination plot to fraudulently extort money from Senator Aloysius Etok by exploiting the perceived rift between him and Governor Akpabio. Consequently, Olaore will be charged to court soon" .
