Cult clash claims 2 in Lagos

Two people were feared dead, while others were injured, Tuesday, when two rival cult groups clashed in Odo-Kekere area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The incident, which took place around 8am, caused tension in the area as residents, especially workers and traders, scampered for safety during the violence that lasted for hours.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said it was a reprisal attack from a cult group whose members had reportedly threatened to avenge the death of some of their members during a clash that took place about two months ago.
A hawker in the area, Miss Chinyeren Chukwuma, said there had been rivalry among members of Aiye and Eiye fraternities, who had been fighting for supremacy in the area.

She said: “Police usually comb the area and make arrests but the groups grow daily and if care is not taken, they will soon overpower Police.”
Two residents of the area, who gave their names as Agoro and Lekumon, told Vanguard that some members of Aiye had positioned themselves in strategic places and launched an attack on a rival group and there was a reprisal attack, which degenerated into violence and two people were killed in the process.
According to the residents, dangerous weapons were freely used by the members until the arrival of law enforcement agents., who restored peace.

A source hinted that the Sagamu Road Police Division were conducting investigations into the matter, adding “no arrest has been made so far as the culprits have gone underground as soon as they achieved their aim.”
