Community policing: Sokoto residents expose Togolese with 316KG of marijuana

Residents of 500 Housing Estates, otherwise called ‘Bafarawa Quarters’ in Sokoto metropolis, recently demonstrated how communities can assist in fighting  crime in their vicinity.  It was at about 5.30am when they were going to the mosque to say their early morning prayers. They accosted a  15- year- old JSS II boy, Godwin Dominic who was brought from Aba to run errands for one of their neighbours identified as Mrs. Bola Balogun.  He was in possession of   two sacks popularly called Ghana Must Go.

One of the residents, Comrade Mohammed Umar Sanyinna told Crime Alert that they had come out at about 5am for morning prayers when they sighted a young boy with a “Ghana-Must-Go” bag and asked him what the content was.   “He claimed that he did not know what was in the bag but that he was sent by a ‘Madam’ to come for it. When we apprehended him, he called someone on phone and a lady came trying to ‘settle’ us. We reported the matter to the police and men of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, came to arrest the woman in the house.”

Another resident, Aliyu Sale Illela alleged that when the house of the woman was searched, about 50 bags of the suspected cannabis were found stating that although the woman that was found in the house was arrested by men of NDLEA, she was later released for reasons they could not explain.

“The men of the NDLEA came and arrested the woman that was found in the house. She was later released by the Agency and we learnt that her husband was taken in her stead,” He added that residents of the area are apprehensive over the release of the suspect.  “We are all asking the motive for the release without proper investigation.  We hope a different story will not be told about the number of the bags of cannabis found in the house,”he asserted.

The State Commander of the Agency,  Alhaji Muhammad Idris confirmed that men of the Command received report of a 15- year- old boy who was apprehended by residents of the  Quarters with cannabis in his possession. “We received reports that a young boy was apprehended by good Samaritans at Bafarawa Quarters with substance suspected to be Cannabis. He was taken to the police and they also reported to NDLEA. We wrote to the Commissioner of Police to release the boy and the substance that was found with him to us for proper investigation.
