Two weeks after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three Northeastern states, following uncontrollable activities of the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram, the insurgents have not given up on the killing of people in Borno State, which was among the affected states.
A senator from the state, Ali Ndume, who gave assessment of security situation in the state in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, said the group was still killing people unabated in some parts of the state but said the affected areas were without military presence.
Ndume, who represents Borno South in the Senate, under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lamented the condition his people were facing at the moment, saying that even getting in touch with them on the phone was impossible, following the severance of communication links in the state by mobile telecommunication operators.
He said: “There is no communication. You can’t call Maiduguri now, so you can’t go on assessment. I was only able to speak with my father two days ago when he had to go to the mountain to make a call.
“The situation, especially in my town, in my local government area is horrible. I want to sadly inform you that even yesterday, the primary school that I attended was razed down by Boko Haram and then a reverend friend of mine, one Reverend Luka, was killed two days ago.
“While the military are making efforts, the insurgency is still there. I know that last week, a renowned businessman and two of his children were killed.
“The military are operating from specific areas. They have made progress in those areas, I understand, but you know, Borno State is so vast, it cannot be covered at once. So, it’s too early to start assessing but I think the issue of security should be taken more seriously by all of us.
“It is not good to make sentiments out of this security situation. And it is not a Borno issue, it is more than that. I really don’t want to talk more than that for obvious reason.
“But whatever government thinks should be done in order to bring peace, there is no price that is too much for peace. Our people want peace; they want to do everything possible to restore peace in Borno State.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
