14 Years Jail Term For Gay-marriages: Nigerians commend National Assembly

Reactions are pouring in after The House of Representatives on Thursday May 29th approved 14 years imprisonment for persons who contracted same sex marriage in the country.

Many Nigerians commended the National assembly for taking the bold step towards preserving our cultural and moral values as Africans. despite the fact that this singular act may cut off some form of foreign aids and assitance from developed western nations who recognise gay rights and marraiges.

The queen of England and the British prime minister both publicly showed their support for gay rights, and urged all commonwealth nations to embrace the provision for the respect of gay rights.

Below are some of the online comments posted by NE readers...

Our first anonymous reader had this to say, 'God bless nigeria & i am proud to be a nigerian.to hell with their foreign aid & nigeria is sovereign nation,so they cannot imposed their ways of life on us.'

Another reader, 'Now i know that not all Nigerian law makers are animals. Kudos to you guys and to hell with "oyibo culture and their aid" am proud to tell the world that i am a NIGERIAN.'

The third anonymous reader also subscribed to it 'There is no doubt that Nigeria is on the path to greatness. If we can stand up for the right thing without the fear of what the "big-brother-nations"like USA, Britain, etc are threating, then there is hope for a better future. I wish to congratulate the house of Reps for this bold decision and ask them to do more. There many more controversial aspects of our constitution that need this kind of bold and clear decision. E.g If Nigeria will be a true secular state, then anything that has to do with sharia law and sharia court should be removed from our constitution. Until we are able to take the bull by the horn on this matter and other similar issues, we may not be able to go far as a Nation. All lesbian and gay sorry for you. You better check out now before the law catch up with you. I love Nigeria. I long live Nigeria.'

Another reader was very well satisfied with this decision 'Even thought u guys loot national tresures but u have proved to Nigerians that u are Africans and u can hold on ur decisions against any foreign culture that is barbaric, let both Americans and Britain go to hell with there devilish life style, wit or without their aid we shall make it,thanks ur guys at Reps'

However others were of the opinion that Nigeria had tougher issues to battle than gay marriages. Issues ranging from corruption and of course, Insecurity.

'Nigeria is in no position to address moral issues when the nation is perishing from unabridged corruption, joblessness, tribalism and incompetence, among other vices. The National Assembly, 99% of whom are nothing but common thieves have the nerves to worry about who is gay and who is not. What is killing the nation, out-of-control corruption or homosexuality? Do you know how many people perish each day in that country as a result of the corruption of our governors, lawmakers, leaders, etc? That's where our priorities should be focused, not on making laws about gay people. What a bunch of non-thinkers!!'

Another reader Yany, had this to say, '...and how many years for the thieving Assembly members and politicians?' he asked rhetorically.
